India vs New Zealand 1st ODI: Records achieved by Indian Players

The only good thing that happened today in the first half of the innings for New Zealand was toss. Today was the first One Day International of the much awaited New Zealand vs India series. New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first. India had two change in their playing XI from the last match that they played in Australia. Ambati Rayadu and Kuldeep Yadav were back in the XI in place of Dinesh Karthik and Ravindra Jadeja.

Looking at the New Zealand batting line up, it was very important for the Indian team to get early breakthroughs to keep the score down. Mohammed Shami provided Indian with an early wicket. In his very first over he dismissed Martin Guptill. He cleaned up Martin Guptill with an amazing delivery. He became the fastest Indian to reach to the 100 wickets tally in One Day Internationals. He reached this record in his 55th match and is followed by Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan at the second and third positions in the list. He also became the joint fifth fastest in the all-time list for taking 100 wickets in world cricket.

Shami did not stop there, he also took the wickets of Colin Munro and Mitchel Santner. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal took 4 wickets and 2 wickets respectively. This helped India to restrict New Zealand to a below-par total of 157.

Because New Zealand got out in 38 overs, the Indian openers had to come out to bat for a short period of 9 overs. In those over apart from one or two hiccups, the Indian openers looked in control of their play. Shikhar Dhawan completed his 5000 international ODI runs. He became the second fastest Indian to reach to the milestone. He completed his 5000 runs in his 118th innings. Only Virat Kohli who reached this milestone in 114 innings is ahead of him. India comprehensively won the game by eight wickets.
