While Rahul is currently India's first-choice middle-order batter, he played seven innings as an opener at the 2019 event as Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury.

KL Rahul’s first fifty during an ODI World Cup came in a crucial encounter against Pakistan. Batting first, KL Rahul opened with Rohit Sharma and the duo added 136 runs for the first innings. While Rohit was impeccable with his knock of 140 runs, Rahul scored 57 runs off 78 balls. India eventually won the game by 89 runs.
Rahul made his second ODI World Cup fifty against Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The opening duo of Rohit and Rahul were once again on top of their game as the duo put up a 180-run stand while batting first.
