Skipper Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to bat first. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson walked to the middle to open the innings, with the pair scoring 73 runs for the first wicket. Lutho Sipamla prized the wicket of Abhishek Sharma (36 off 18) on the penultimate ball of the powerplay, with that being the only wicket to fall in the entire Indian innings.

Later on, Sanju Samson (109* off 56) and Tilak Varma (120* off 47) took on the Proteas' bowling attack and smashed boundaries all over the park. The duo ensured that Team India scored 200 in the 15th over and went all out at the South African bowlers, ending up with 283/1 on board.

This is India's second-highest total in the format. Earlier last month, the Men in Blue scored 297/6 against Bangladesh in the third T20I in Hyderabad, which saw them register their highest total and the highest total for a full-member team.

Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma also scaled some personal milestones, with the latter becoming the second Indian after Samson to score consecutive tons in T20Is. Samson also scored his third ton in the format this year, which sees him become the first batter in T20Is this year to score three tons.

Together, the duo put 210 runs for the second wicket, making it the highest partnership for any wicket in the format.
