Debutant Josh Hull secured his maiden international wicket by dismissing the well-set Pathum Nissanka on Day 2 of the third Test between England and Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 7. The match is being played at The Oval in London.

The dismissal occurred on the third ball of the 16th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. The left-arm pacer delivered a full-length ball outside off-stump and Nissanka drove it off the front foot. However, the shot came off the toe of the bat and headed towards the short extra cover area.

Chris Woakes, who was stationed there, made a full-length dive to his right and took a superb catch, securing Hull’s maiden international wicket.

Nissanka played an entertaining innings, scoring 64 off 51 balls with nine boundaries to his name. His dismissal left the Sri Lankan team struggling at 91/4 after 15.3 overs.


Sri Lanka loses half of their side for just 93 runs

England finished Day 1 at 221-3 after 44.1 overs, with play halted due to bad weather and Captain Ollie Pope (103*) and vice-captain Harry Brook (8*) at the crease. The hosts didn’t start Day 2 well as Milan Rathnayake dismissed Brook for just 19 runs.

Shortly after, Jamie Smith was removed by Vishwa Fernando for 16. The Sri Lankan bowlers then took control and England quickly collapsed from 290/4 to 325/10.

Ollie Pope remained the top scorer with 154 off 156 balls, in a knock that included 19 boundaries and two sixes. Rathnayake was the standout bowler for the visitors, claiming three wickets.

In response, Sri Lanka's openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne put on 34 runs in 38 balls before the latter was run out for nine. Kusal Mendis' struggles persisted as he was dismissed for 14.

Angelo Mathews (3) and Dinesh Chandimal (0) were dismissed shortly after, along with Nissanka, who scored 64.

As a result, Sri Lanka lost five wickets for just 93 runs in 16.2 overs. At the time of writing, Sri Lanka is at 130/5 after 26 overs, with Dhananjaya de Silva (15) and Kamindu Mendis (24) at the crease.
