Both Kohli and Rohit announced their respective retirements from Test cricket last month. Following the latter's decision to hang his boots up from the red-ball format, Gill was appointed as new Test captain for the England tour, with keeper-batter Rishabh Pant being picked as his deputy.

The 25-year-old will have a huge task to prove himself both as captain and batter during the tour of England. He has played 32 Test matches so far and has had a middling career in the longest format of cricket.
