Top 6 cricketers with the weirdest hairstyles

curtly ambrose

We have seen them humiliate bowlers with some humongous shots and send the ball out of the park many a time. We have seen some of them render the batsman utterly clueless with their clever slow deliveries or lightning fast speed. We even remember some of them for their amazing agility on the field. Every time they take the ground, they leave us stumped with their talent and their game. However, there is more to them than just cricket, they have millions of fans and everything they do becomes an instant style statement.

So instead of their on-field antics, let’s analyse and choose the top 5 cricketers with weirdest hairstyles. A few, like Andrew Russell, Jason Gillespie and our very own Ishant Sharma came pretty close but these five players, mentioned below, stand out for the impact they manage to create on the field and the hairstyle they adorn with it.

6) Curtly Ambrose

The funkiest of the funkiest hairstyles!

The first match of the Cricket All Stars provided a lot of entertainment for the packed house that had turned up at the Citi Field stadium in New York. Apart from the fours and sixes that were flying all over the stadium, there was another sight that left many a fan watching amused.

That sight was that of Curtly Ambrose and his hairstyle. With very little hair around his head and a strand with beads on them hanging from the centre, it left everybody watching the action in splits.

5) Sunil Narine

The mystery spinner, with his clever variations, has been foxing the batsmen for quite some time now. But leaving his bowling aside, his funny hairstyle is equally mysterious and is one of its kind. Though one could say that it is a Mohawk but unlike the classic “Beckham Mohawk”, this one looks to be crashing into each other from the sides before curling on the top.

In his own words, he has been wearing it for 5-6 years now and it is easy to maintain and he isn’t looking to change it anytime soon. The hairstyle is quite unlike him in reality for he is said to be an extremely down to earth, shy and introvert personality in the dressing room but the West Indians are known for their funky hairstyles and this one certainly fits the bill in every sense. So long as he keeps on picking up wickets, nobody is complaining.

4) Andrew Symonds

The burly controversial Australian is famous for the monkey-gate scandal, match fixing allegations and his various reprimands for disciplinary issues but nobody could question his cricketing skills that made him such a valuable asset to the Aussies.

However, think of Andrew Symonds and instantly your mind tends to waver to his long thick golden locks that would remind some of Godzilla! Add a thick layer of zinc cream on his lips and Andrew Symonds stood out among all those out on the field as if from outer space.

Often ridiculed and questioned about his dreadlocks, the funny Aussie all-rounder always took it in his stride and used to flash his notorious smile that left his fans reeling with laughter till he changed over to all new bald look and has been keeping it ever since.

3) Chris Gayle:

Always the cool customer!

Another West Indian and another funky hairstyle – the big Chris Gayle needs no introduction. Nobody has inflicted more damage, bruised more egos of bowlers all around the world than this swashbuckling West Indian. However, look at his hairstyles (which keep changing every year) and you end up flashing a large grin.

The man is a cool dude in the true sense with colourful clothes, funny hair, the “Gangnam dance” and an attitude without a care in the world. Not so long ago, he used to sport a huge ball of hair similar to the gangsters of the 80’s look but as he reached his 30’s he switched over to this more sophisticated mature look.

2) Lasith Malinga

“The Slinger” was a strong contender for the top spot. Lasith Malinga is one of his kind, be it his action, his accuracy in hitting the stumps or his hairstyle. His armoury of slow yorkers, slower bouncers and the sudden short ball have foxed even the wiliest of batsmen in the world but his hairstyle too has stunned the cricketing world.

His curly blonde highlighted mop of hair remain in news as much his bowling performances and the man manages to carry it off in a unique way. In some ways his hairstyle is a true picture of himself – confident and different from the others. He is a true revelation coming out of the small island nation of Sri Lanka and just like his bowling, his hairstyle has won a lot of appreciation.

1) M.S Dhoni

Captain of the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni needs no introduction. Anybody who has even the slightest of knowledge of the game knows this man as one of the most successful captains in the history of cricket, an explosive batsman and a true match winner. He may be toping most lists, but when it comes to hairstyles, two days back, “Captain Cool” wouldn’t have been at the top spot. But in the game against Titans in Ranchi, he stunned the crowd by sporting a bald buzz hawk, something that is new not only to Indian cricketers but cricketers all over the world.

He might have failed to make a big score but his hair certainly got eyes rolling. The bald buzz of the Chennai Super Kings captain reminded us of Mario Balotelli. MS Dhoni has always had his way with his hairdos and who can forget his 72 of 36 balls in Lahore where he got the then Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf to praise his long hair in the post-match presentation.
