The F1 penalty points system was put in place to ensure driving standards met a threshold. As a part of this, drivers are given penalty points based on any transgressions committed on the track. The penalty points are applicable to the drivers for 12 months.
If a driver accumulates more than 12 F1 penalty points, a one-race ban is implemented. It's almost been a decade since this system was implemented, and not even a single driver has been banned.
