The F1 penalty points system will not be the primary talking point this weekend, as Max Verstappen has seen two of his points expire. The Dutch driver is now at nine points. While still under threat, the stress levels would be lower this time around, as it is not just a point that could force him to sit out a future race.
Whether the system is fair or not is a question for another day, as drivers have given opposing views on it. With that being said, the system was first introduced in 2014 with the aim of keeping the driver standards in check.
If a driver commits a transgression, he is given penalty points. These penalty points accumulate, and the driver who hits a 12 penalty point number is banned for a race.
Max Verstappen was perilously close to it in Austria, and he still is. Kevin Magnussen is the only driver to this day who has been banned due to this system. With that being said, as we get ready for the F1 British GP, let's take a look at where the drivers stack up in terms of penalty points.
