5 Premier League wonderkids who should consider a switch to the Bundesliga

One of the biggest stories during the current transfer window has been the saga surrounding Chelsea wonderkid Callum Hudson-Odoi. Hudson-Odoi – who won the u17 World Cup with England in 2017 – has apparently been pushing for a move away from Stamford Bridge and it looks likely that German giants Bayern Munich are his destination.

If Hudson-Odoi makes the move, he won’t be the first Premier League youngster to make the jump to the Bundesliga. As most fans are now well aware, English wonderkids Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson have both made the move to Germany in recent years – Sancho with a permanent move to Borussia Dortmund – and both have seen tremendous success.

So who else could “do a Sancho” and make the jump to the Bundesliga? We know about the possibility of Hudson-Odoi moving to Germany, but these other 5 Premier League wonderkids might also consider doing the same in the near future.

#1 Phil Foden

Could Phil Foden join his former teammate Sancho in the Bundesliga?

Pep Guardiola might seem to be a firm believer in the talent of England youngster Phil Foden – who has made 16 appearances for Manchester City thus far this season, 11 of which came from the substitutes’ bench – but could his future actually lie away from Eastlands? Quite possibly. Sure, there’s no need for Foden to rush just yet as he’s still only 18 years old, but at some point he’s going to need a lot more first team football than he’s currently getting.

And can the creative midfielder really be expected to get that at Manchester City – where he sits firmly behind David Silva, Bernardo Silva and arguably Ilkay Gundogan in the pecking order? It just doesn’t seem likely. Fans have mentioned a kind of succession movement – in which Bernardo Silva would edge out David Silva as the first choice, with Foden then moving into Bernardo’s spot as second choice, but if that even happens, when will it be?

More to the point, can Foden really trust a club like Manchester City – who throw money around like it means nothing – not to simply go out and buy a proven world-class player in his position once the influence of David Silva begins to wane?

Jadon Sancho evidently didn’t believe first team chances were likely at City and so he jumped to Dortmund, where he’s now thriving. It says a lot that Sancho has 1402 minutes of football this season compared to Foden’s 187. So perhaps Foden would be best to join his former teammate and search for glory in Germany – rather than wait for a shot that might never come in Manchester.

#2 Ethan Ampadu

Ethan Ampadu has been starved of playing time at Chelsea

If Callum Hudson-Odoi is considering leaving Chelsea for the Bundesliga due to a lack of first team opportunities, then surely it won’t be long before his teammate Ethan Ampadu considers a similar move. The versatile Welshman – who can play both in central defense and as a holding midfielder – joined Chelsea in the summer of 2017, but first-team chances have since been few and far between.

Despite being just 18 years old – a couple of months older than Hudson-Odoi – Ampadu has proven to be such a developed talent that he already has 6 full international caps for Wales, and this past September saw him take a starring role as his side thumped the Republic of Ireland 4-1. Somehow though, this just hasn’t been enough for Chelsea.

In 2018/19 Ampadu has yet to appear in Premier League action, and despite Chelsea competing in two competitions usually considered to be secondary – the EFL Cup and the Europa League – the youngster has still only made 3 appearances for the Blues, one of which came as a substitute. 117 minutes of competitive football simply isn’t enough for a player of his standard.

Essentially, as a full international and a player who appears to have all the potential in the world, Ampadu would be an absolute steal for any Bundesliga club. Whether Chelsea would want to let him go is another thing, but with player power becoming ever stronger, perhaps it’d be a good idea for him to attempt to make the jump.

#3 Angel Gomes

While various members of England’s 2017 U17 World Cup winning side have gone on to appear in first team action over the last two seasons, a lot of them, even the more outstanding talents, are still struggling for minutes at their Premier League clubs. One such player is attacking midfielder Angel Gomes, who currently plays at Manchester United.

Gomes scored twice in the u17 World Cup and actually made his first team debut before the tournament, replacing Wayne Rooney in a May 2017 game against Crystal Palace. Just 16 at the time, he became United’s youngest debutant since the legendary Duncan Edwards. But since then, chances have been few and far between.

It’s hardly a surprise – Jose Mourinho, a man hardly renowned for his faith in youth, deployed Gomes just once in 2017/18 and while he’s since made his Premier League debut as a substitute under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils have now become a club which looks to buy top talent rather than nurture its prospects.

It’s unfortunate, given Gomes’s talents – talents which have earned him lofty comparisons to Brazilian legend Ronaldinho as well as a United homegrown hero in Paul Scholes. He’s clearly got top potential – and if he won’t be given the chance to live up to that potential at Old Trafford, then Gomes could do much worse than a move to the Bundesliga – where young talents are given much more of a chance.

#4 Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal currently host plenty of young talent, including Reiss Nelson – who is already lighting up the Bundesliga in his loan spell at Hoffenheim. But while Nelson has been a hit in Germany – and fellow youngsters Emile Smith Rowe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock have seen handfuls of action thus far this season, another hot prospect has struggled for playing time with the Gunners.

Striker Eddie Nketiah has made just 5 appearances this season – 3 from the subs bench – and despite his clear talents, it’s hard to see him making a dent in the Premier League with Arsenal any time soon. And it’s through no fault of his own – how do you displace a pair of truly top class strikers in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette?

Nketiah’s goal record at international level is fantastic, though – 18 goals in 20 appearances across the various age groups – and in 2017/18 he famously made an appearance in the EFL Cup with Arsenal, scoring 2 goals in the 4th round victory over Norwich. He’s clearly a player ready for the big time.

So why not follow Nelson to the Bundesliga? He’d clearly be given more opportunities there and would almost definitely pick up valuable experience – something that can only be gained by the playing time he simply won’t get at the Emirates with Aubameyang and Lacazette ahead of him. With his goal record at youth level, there would surely be a number of Bundesliga clubs who’d be willing to take a punt on him.

#5 Mason Mount

Chelsea's Mason Mount is having a great season on loan at Derby

Chelsea youngster Mason Mount is currently on loan at Frank Lampard’s Derby County, and by any standards, he’s having a pretty productive season. The creative midfielder has made 26 starts in the Championship with the Rams, scoring 4 goals and making 2 assists. Essentially, he’s proven to the Blues that he’d be worth giving a chance to.

But will he ever get that chance? History suggests it isn’t likely. Chelsea’s squad is simply chock-full of midfielders, and they’re clearly still willing to spend big money on proven talent, as their recent signing of Christian Pulisic proves. Plus, a good season on loan doesn’t always mean the Blues will give a player a chance – look at Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for examples of that.

Mount has already made the England senior squad and although he hasn’t received his first cap yet, it seems like only a matter of time. But to make it that far he’s going to have to keep playing, and therefore a move away from Stamford Bridge seems likely.

Making his destination the Bundesliga could be a very smart move; Mount has already shown that he’s capable of adjusting to a foreign league, as he had two successful seasons in the Netherlands with Vitesse. And of course, the Bundesliga is a step up from both the Championship and the Eredivisie. German teams have already shown their willingness to play young talent, and judging by his talents, Mount could be as big a success as Jadon Sancho there.
