
The CONMEBOL Copa America, previously known as the South American Football Championship, is a tournament played by South American nations. After the Olympic football tournament, it is the second-oldest international football competition and the oldest continental football competition. The football tournament started in 1916 with only Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil as participants.
As of May 2025, Argentina have won the most Copa America trophies with 16 to their name. They defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final of the 2024 Copa America edition. Argentina, who are captained by Lionel Messi, have also featured in the most Copa America finals as they have played in 30 finals. Since 1993, all 10 CONMEBOL teams as well as two more sides from other confederations, have taken part in the tournament.
