Frank Lampard of Manchester City celebrates his team's third goal against Sunderland

Manchester City contrived to lose a two-goal lead in their second consecutive Premier League match, but Frank Lampard played saviour again with a dramatically late header to gift full points to the Etihad Stadium on New Year’s Day.

Sunderland managed to stave off Manchester City attacks for a long time, until a frantic passage of play ensued from the 57th minute onwards. Yaya Toure clattered in a long-range effort before Stevan Jovetic increased the lead with an impudent flick.

Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson, both formerly players for Manchester City, scored for Sunderland in the 68th and 71st minute, the latter from a penalty after a Pablo Zabaleta tackle was penalized.

Frank Lampard had entered the fray in the second half, and scored his seventh goal of the season with a dramatically late header. Gael Clichy was City’s provider on two ocassions.

Manchester City are now level on points with Chelsea at the top of the table with 46 points, and might even turn out to be league leaders by the end of the night, if Chelsea go down to Tottenham Hotspur by two or more goals.

Manchester City 1-0 Sunderland: Toure (57’)

Manchester City 2-0 Sunderland: Jovetic (66’)

Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland: Rodwell (68’)

Manchester City 3-2 Sunderland: Lampard (73’)
