A convincing win over CA Osasuna has already put Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table. The Madrid club had five different goals scorers on the day and the belief coursing through this squad is unbelievable. Cristiano Ronaldo was back in action on the weekend and he opened the scoring with a well-taken goal.

Thereafter defenders Danilo, Pepe and Sergio Ramos all got on the score-sheet before Luka Modric completed the rout with a fine finish. The second goal was an example of toying with the defence before Danilo unleashed a shot which ended up past the keeper in the right-hand corner.

The Croatian was speaking to the media after and spoke about how the team was happy to win the game and hoped that the team would continue to dish out such football which was both entertaining and result oriented. Modric appreciated the ovation of the fans and was quoted saying that he wanted to conclude his career at Madrid,

As reported in the English version of AS, Modric stated, “I want to retire at Real Madrid. It’s the best club in the world and we’ll continue fighting for titles.” The Croatian accepted that while winning the Champion’s League was on the list, winning the league this season takes more priority given that it has almost been four seasons since Real Madrid last won the League.

“Real Madrid always want to win the Champions League but it’s been a long time since we won the league and it’s our priority. We want to win everything but this year we’re going for La Liga.”

Real of top of La Liga as closest rivals drop points

A fifth successive year without a league for Real Madrid is unimaginable in the eyes of the player. With rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both dropping points already, Real Madrid have already established a lead of four and three points respectively over their closest challengers as per the table last season.

Atletico picked up their first win of the La Liga and Diego Simeone, the Atletico manager, has already acknowledged the subdued start to the campaign. With Griezmann scoring a brace, Atletico never looked like giving up control in the game as they ran out 4-0 winners.

Real’s win this weekend was the 15th consecutive La Liga win under Zinedine Zidane and with this win he equalled the club record set by Miguel Munoz’s side in the 1960-61 season. Considering the fact that the 60-61 side comprised of Madrid legends such as Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas, the current side has walked into hallowed company indeed.

Barcelona have the record of 16 La Liga wins in a row and Real Madrid know that a win against their next opponents (Villarreal and Espanyol) will help them equal the record and also give them a good chance of setting a new record.

Modric who had arrived from Spurs in the summer of 2012 has almost won all the trophies that are available in club competition with Real Madrid. The league title though has deserted the Croatian in a league where the title is decided on very fine margins.

With their Champions League campaign starting this week against Sporting Lisbon, Modric will hope he and his team-mates are able to carry on the momentum of the weekend’s win.
