What’s the story?

Real Madrid are set to undergo a huge change to their squad in the summer and now latest reports from Spanish publication Diario Gol claim that Alvaro Morata has told club captain Sergio Ramos that he wants to leave Real Madrid and join a Premier League side (believed to be Chelsea) in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard has failed to find a regular starting berth with Zidane preferring to start the tried and tested BBC (Bale, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo) for all the big matches. The 24-year-old also recently added fuel to the rumours when he admitted that he would like to play under Antonio Conte in the future.

Premier League bound?

The 24-year old Madrid-born striker has grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of opportunities and this is not the first time there have been reports of him being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Also, in a recent interview with The Guardian, when Morata was asked about the possibility of joining the Premier League and Chelsea in particular, he said: “If an offer like that comes again and they (Madrid) want to sell, I shouldn’t close doors. I loved Italy but if one day I have to leave, I’m sure it will be to the Premier League.”

The heart of the matter

It promises to be a summer of huge change at Real Madrid and plenty of big names are expected to enter and exit the revolving doors of Santiago Bernabeu. Among the big-name arrivals, Chelsea star Eden Hazard and Manchester United’s David de Gea have already reportedly sealed moves to Madrid while Monaco youngster Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund’s Aubameyang could also be signed.

On the other hand, James Rodriguez’s time at Madrid looks all but over and now Morata is more than likely to join him in exiting the Bernabeu. Should Morata leave, a move to Chelsea looks the most likely. In the same interview with The Guardian, Morata spoke about Conte’s influence:

“He (Conte) bet on me for Juventus but left before I arrived; then he wanted me at Chelsea come what may. He knows me better than I could imagine, I’m sure, and that’s important: it motivates you to work hard, train well.”

What’s next?

Diego Costa’s future looks uncertain at Chelsea and Antonio Conte will be on the lookout for a quality replacement. Still only 24, Morata will look to use the limited opportunities he gets at Madrid from now until the end of the season to show the world that he is a top quality striker.

Author’s take

At 24, Morata is at the prime of his career and deserves to be getting regular playing time. However, in a club like Real Madrid it is always difficult to guarantee such things and the Spaniard should join Chelsea in the summer if his situation does not improve.
