Stats: Top goal scorers in Europe this season; Suarez first player to score 30 goals
Barcelona striker Luis Suarez tops the list of the highest goal scorers in Europe. After netting in the Blaugrana’s 3-1 win at home vs Athletic Bilbao, the former Liverpool star became the first player in Europe to cross the 30-goal mark this season.
Suarez has been in brilliant form ever since joining Barcelona, but he has taken his goal scoring exploits to another level this season. Despite the injury to Lionel Messi, the 29-year-old made sure that the club don’t miss the little Argentinian. Forming a destructive front 3 with Messi and Neymar, Suarez has become the top scorer in Europe this season, ahead of his two teammates.
The Uruguayan leads the La Liga scoring charts as well, with 18 strikes to his name, followed by Karim Benzema (17), Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have 16 each. The £75 million man notched up 5 goals in the Champions League and the same in Barcelona’s Club World Cup triumph. A goal each in the UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Rey completed his 30 goals.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo comes in at No. 2 with 27 goals while Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira, on 25 goals each, round off the top 3. Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emeric Aubameyang finds himself right after the aforementioned four players.
The list contains 3 players from Barcelona – the famed trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, while their rivals Real Madrid have 2 representatives as Benzema joins his teammate Ronaldo. Bayern Munich have two in the form of Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller. Gonzalo Higuain is the only player from Serie A while Zlatan Ibrahimovic holds the fort for Ligue 1 in the list.
No Premier League player has managed to score 20 goals this season, which serves as a stark eye-opener to the fans regarding the quality of strikers in England. Romelu Lukaku, with 19 goals, is the top scorer from a Premier League club.
The list only takes into account goals scored by players for their clubs in official competitions.
