There were a ton of new gameplay aspects introduced in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4. Many of them have to do with Chrome, the substance that is slowly taking over the island and causing havoc.

This season, players can become a blob, phase through walls, and upgrade weapons simply by using them. The goo has changed a lot more than just the makeup of the map.

It has also added two important things, the first being the Herald boss. Last season, Fortnite did not have an antagonist, but this season it has had one since the first day.

It has also added the Chrome Vortex, which is the subject of a week nine challenge. The question is, what is it?

What does Chrome Vortex do in Fortnite? Explaining the new weather phenomenon in Chapter 3 Season 4

The Chrome Vortex is something most players have undoubtedly seen when playing around this season. It's the tornado that swirls around the map in every match, picking up and Chrome-ifying everything it touches.

Players can use it for two different things. First, it can be used to Chrome-ify anything, so walking into it or driving into it will result in everything turning to Chrome.

This is useful for another week nine challenge in which players must get Chromed while driving.

Additionally, it can be used to send loopers flying through the air. Even though it's filled with Chrome, it is still a tornado. As such, it can propel them into the air, around the vortex, and out into the world.

It can be difficult to use the Chrome Vortex in Fortnite to move around, but it is a helpful mobility aspect of the game since other weather events are not active in Chapter 3 Season 4.

The biggest aspect of the special vortex is that it turns players Chrome, which can be helpful for a lot of reasons.

Being Chromed allows gamers to move through walls and turn into a blob while sprinting. The blob form can remove fall damage, allow loopers to dash into the air or on the ground, and make them smaller to avoid damage.

Chrome is also fireproof, and as such, Fortnite players will not burn when they are covered in the goo. They can take damage from a firefly jar breaking, but the ensuing flames will do nothing to them.

Additionally, the substance has a healing effect on gamers. When they are Chromed, they will regain one health every 2.5 seconds. Many gamers might not have realized that Chrome Splashes can technically be a healing item as well.

All told, the goo can essentially cover everything in the game. Gamers can be covered whether it's by the Chrome Vortex or a Chrome Splash; it can cover wildlife too.

Structures, vehicles, and even chests can be Chromed, though, and they will showcase different properties when they are covered by the goo.

It's unclear what exactly Chrome is doing to the island, but it is clear that it has introduced a ton of new gameplay aspects this season.
