Online games like Fortnite comprise a strong security backend that ensures account safety and maintains privacy for active players on their platforms. Gaming companies often take several measures to help their players protect their valuable accounts against malicious hackers and unauthorized users.

These measures include players using several login methods using an app or browser as they begin to use their platform to play games. Throughout the past few years, online games have seen a surge in active players, which has also motivated developers to create newer ways to protect their users against malicious activities on their accounts.

However, one common method has always remained the same across several online games that require players to log in and involves in-app purchases. This method, called MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication), requires players to perform multiple steps to log in to their accounts. Here's what MFA means in Fortnite and how to enable it on your Epic Games account.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), also known as Two Factor Authentication (2FA), is a login method that requires users to perform multiple steps to log in to their accounts. This method is much more secure than using a traditional password or pin, as these could easily be hacked and leaked to other users over the internet using malicious phishing methods.

However, MFA requires users to choose between several methods and at least one additional step that asks them to enter an additional code after entering their password. Fortnite users with an Epic Games account can choose between using an authenticator app or an email address as their authentication method.

Once players have opted into Two-Factor Authentication, they will be asked to enter the code from their preferred two-factor authentication method. They will then be signed into their account.

Players will be prompted for the two-factor passcode the first time they sign in after enabling the feature, if they use a new device, if it's been over 30 days since they last signed in, or if they've cleared their browser cookies recently.

To enable Two Factor Authentication in Fortnite, follow these steps:

  1. Head over to www.epicgames.com
  2. Log in to your Epic Account using the Sign-In feature
  3. Head to your Account Settings
  4. Click on the Password and Security tab to view your security settings
  5. At the bottom of the page, under the Two Factor Authentication heading, click to Enable Authenticator App or Enable Email Authentication as your two-factor method
  6. If you prefer to use an authenticator app for two-step verification, here are a few common authenticator apps that can be found in your mobile device app store:
  • Google Authenticator
  • LastPass Authenticator
  • Microsoft Authenticator
  • Authy

All you need to do is install any of those apps or keep your mailbox open whenever you sign in to your Epic Games account. During login, the site will send a code on either of these methods, and you need to copy and paste it on the Epic Games sign-in portal to enter into your account.

Enabling MFA or 2FA on your Fortnite account is quite rewarding, as you can also get a free OG Boogie Down emote that you can use in your in-game locker. However, the offer is currently valid and has no expiration date. Players who own Save The World will also receive 50 Armory Slots, 10 Backpack Slots, and one Legendary Troll Stash once they enable 2FA on their Epic Account.

In addition, players also need to enable 2FA in case they wish to gift their friends a cosmetic from the Item Shop or participate in a tournament that grants them free items or cash prizes. Using 2FA ensures your account is secure and protects against ongoing scams and hacks that several Fortnite players have fallen for and lost their accounts altogether.
