Performance

The new ROG Xbox Ally comes with the Ryzen Z2 A processor, compared to the Ryzen Z1 Extreme on the ROG Ally. Based on the CPU specs seen on the AMD website, the Ryzen Z2 A is comparatively less powerful than the Z1 Extreme, featuring fewer cores, threads, and an older-gen GPU. This means the Xbox Ally could potentially be less powerful than the ROG Ally.

However, it’s important to note that the Xbox Ally is designed more for casual gaming rather than being a high-performance, hardcore gaming console. It comes with an upgraded 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, along with the same 512GB SSD storage. While gaming on the Xbox Ally will still be a great experience, it may deliver slightly lower framerates compared to the original ROG Ally.

The Xbox Games Showcase announced several new games, including some major ones like Call of Duty Black Ops 7, High on Life 2, and even a remaster of the original Gears of War. While their release on the handheld isn't confirmed, it'd be interesting to see how these titles would run on the hardware of the Xbox Ally.

Display

Both consoles are almost identical in terms of display specifications, which is somewhat surprising. However, given the high-quality specs of the original ROG Ally, it appears that Asus has decided to retain the same display for the Xbox Ally.

Both devices feature a 7-inch FHD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, they support AMD FreeSync Premium, which helps prevent screen tearing and stuttering. The consoles also come with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, providing excellent durability and damage protection.

Build and design

The Xbox Ally’s new design resembles a hybrid between the Asus ROG Ally and a standard Xbox controller, featuring a familiar layout. However, this integration results in a bulkier and more ergonomic grip. While this sacrifices some portability, it makes up for it with comfort and ease of handling.

The new handheld is not only bigger than the original Ally but is also roughly 70g heavier at 670g. Both consoles feature Hall Effect analog triggers, HD haptics, and a 6-Axis Gyro. Thus, gaming on either of these devices should feel amazing, with the Xbox Ally being the more comfortable option.

Battery

The ROG Xbox Ally is the clear winner here with its 60 Wh battery. While we don't know for sure how long it'd last, we can be certain that it could perform better than the ROG Ally's 40 Wh battery.

Based on user reviews, the ROG Ally lasted an average of two to three hours on higher power modes, so we could expect slightly longer runtimes on the Xbox Ally.

Final verdict

This wraps up the comparison between the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Ally. Currently, the official pricing of the ROG Xbox Ally has yet to be announced, making it difficult to compare the two in terms of cost. Since the original Ally is now two years old, it is becoming harder to find.

Even though the original ROG Ally boasts a more powerful processor, the ROG Xbox Ally’s larger battery and more ergonomic design could make it the better option.

While exact performance metrics are still unknown, the Xbox Ally’s processor may underperform compared to the ROG Ally. However, if the pricing is similar, the new Xbox handheld could be the clear winner.
