A first ODI defeat in 2025 for India to kick off this much-anticipated tour on not a very positive note for the visitors. While the eyeballs were on the big giants, it turned to be more of weather-watching and some cricket in between and after 47 overs in 8 hours, Australia have emerged victorious with some much better cricket but also the rub of the green on their side. The action now moves to Adelaide for the second of the 3 ODIs which will be on Thursday (Oct 23). We will catch you then, till then there is a lot of cricket lined up for you. Meanwhile, the Indian women are locking horns with the England Women in an extremely crucial WC game in Indore, you can follow the live action here. This is Sourabh Agrawal signing off on behalf of Pradeep Somasekhar and the entire team, cheers!
Mitchell Marsh is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: "Strange game, yes. Thanks to the fan to stick around and nice to get a win. Nice get ourselves home, I love playing for Australia, try to do my bit every time. I was swinging around at the start, trying to get the team through. Young guys came on, got us over the line. Phillipe made my job easy, took the pressure off. Really enjoyed playing in front of a big crowd."
Shubman Gill [India captain]: "When you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you always play the catch up game. Lots of learning from this game, lots of things to do well next game. We didn't take the game deep, but we kept ourselves in the game with the ball for the most part. We're very fortunate wherever we play, fans turn up in big numbers. Hope they turn up in Adelaide as well."

Australia (131/3 in 21.1 overs) beat India (136/9 in 26 overs) by 7 wickets via DLS method
A comprehensive win in the end and it is a victorious start to the summer for the Aussies as they take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series. This also marks the first ODI win for Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
The target was cut down to 131 in 26 overs as per the DLS system after India scored 136/9 in their quota in an innings which was marred be rain breaks denying any sort of momentum for the batters. The Indian top-order fell to Hazlewood and Starc first up in the morning with the moving ball as Australia's star duo got the better of India's.
From 45/4 in the 14th over, 30s from KL Rahul and Axar Patel plus a 11-ball 19 cameo from debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy made sure India got some respectability getting upto 136, however they kept losing wickets. For Australia, Matthew Kuhnemann was top-class with his left-arm spin towards the later half of the innings and contained the batters well along with picking up a couple of wickets.
The chase begin with an early blow to Australia as Arshdeep trapped Head in the second over itself. At that moment, India believed that they had a sniff specially having gotten their nemesis away. However, a cool and calculated skipper Mitchell Marsh made sure there are no hiccups and he boshed a few maximums in the powerplay killing the Indian hopes.
Axar Patel picked up Matt Short in the 7th over but it was too little too late. Josh Phillipe, playing and ODI after 2021, looked pretty settled at the crease and played a much-needed hand of 37 with his skipper at the other end playing some lovely shots.
In the end, India picked up just 3 wickets and Australia won with 29 balls to spare which gives the hosts a pretty commanding win. Long story short, India just did not have enough runs and the Indian bowlers were not consistent enough.
21.1 Nitish Kumar Reddy to Matt Renshaw, THAT'S IT! Australia go 1-0 up in this ODI series! Has been a clinical performance all throughout and they cruised to this below par total from India. Short into the batter, Renshaw gets inside the line, fends it into the on-side for a single to seal the game.
Small boos from the crowd as Renshaw retains the strike with just 1 needed, scores level. They perhaps wanted the skipper and the local man to hit the winning runs and get to his fifty, won't happen.

Just one hit away now, 4 needed
20.3 Arshdeep Singh to Matt Renshaw, FOUR! No chance for Sundar to stop that one, another boundary. Short into the batter, Renshaw swivels and pulled it flat to fine-leg, goes one bounce into the ropes.
20.2 Arshdeep Singh to Matt Renshaw, back of a length, shaping in on the fourth stump. Renshaw went back and eases it to backward point.
20.2 Arshdeep Singh to Matt Renshaw, WIDE! Wayward line from Arshdeep there. Length delivery, goes just outside the tramline, wide has been signaled.
20.1 Arshdeep Singh to Mitchell Marsh, full and nipped back into the stumps. Marsh stroked it to long-on for one.
This could be the final over of the game, Australia need 10. Arshdeep certainly won't want that.

Dheeraj: "Why Bumrah is not playing in this series?" He has been rested for the ODIs and will come in for the T20s since we are building up to the T20 WC.
