"Day 3 at Edgbaston is usually a great day to bat, but Day 1 and Day 2 have been here as well, There are some blue skies over my right shoulder which India will want to blow over and come here because this pitch looks dry. On one side there is a bit of rough for Jadeja to target but England only have one left-hander left in the form of Stokes. Not a lot of rough on the other side and India might regret not playing Arshdeep here because he would have created the rough for Sundar. It looks pretty dry and India will look it keeps getting drier."

Commentary

It is a drubbing for England as India smash them and register their fourth-biggest win and the biggest away win in Test cricket. India have dominated the majority of the first 10 days of this 5-match series. Now, some big names like Bumrah and Archer are expected to return and bolster their respective sides at Lord's in the third test which starts on Wednesday (July 10). The Anderson-Tendulkar trophy is well and truly alive and we can't wait for the next chapter of this enthralling saga. Shubman Gill is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: "All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things in this test. The way we came back with the ball, and on the field, was phenomenal. We were going to drop those chances again in this test match with plenty of runs on the board. We were able to get through the top order was brilliant. Even Prasidh didn't get as many wickets as we expected, but he did well. Bowled with so much heart, got the ball to move both the ways. It was difficult to do, he did that and was magnificent for us. I'd say, I'm feeling comfortable with my game. Hopefully we can win the series with my contribution too. Everyday is a learning curve for me, I just want to play as a batter, I want to make my decisions as a batter. Sometimes as a captain you can't take those decisions, but as a batter I can. Bumrah? Yes, definitely. Most iconic cricket stadium in the world, no bigger honour to lead the country at Lord's."

Ben Stokes [England captain]: "Tough one. I think two moments, having them at 200 for 5, happy to have them there and couldn't capitalize. We were 80-5 and then bounced back, just couldn't stop them later on. When you have a team 200 for 5, you're in a commanding position, but the pitch suited India more than us. We always struggled. We tried everything, we changed plans. When the teams are on top, it's tough to stop them. The opposition are full of class players, Shubman himself had a wonderful game. It is always tough, when you spend a lot of time on the field, your body's tired. Jamie has been incredible since he's come into the team. He's been exceptional with the bat, goes under the radar with the keeping skills. Harry and Smith wrestled the momentum back, but wasn't enough. That'll be in a couple of days, was a tough week. Bowlers run in hard, we need to access and see what works out for us in the Lord's."

Fittingly, it is Akash Deep with the final wicket and the skipper Shubman Gill with the catch to close things out, India's best two players in this test match as this young brigade scripts history, India have won a test match for the first time at Edgbaston. It took them nine attempts in doing so but what a way and what a time to do it.

When the coin was flipped four days ago and the Indian skipper Shubman Gill announced the team, a lot was said. Questions were asked about the team combination, about why the spearhead Bumrah was missing, about why the team did not go with the "supposed" right combination but this team has put all that aside and produced a result that has silenced all the naysayers.

The stump is taken out by Gill, he has had a test match as close to perfection as one can have. Akash Deep has a stump in his hand too, he has announced himself on the world stage with a maiden 10-wicket haul in tests and the best match-figures for an Indian pacer in England (10/187). But it is not about one or two individuals, this has been a true team effort. From 5 out of the top-6 batters getting at least a fifty in the match to every bowler taking at least a wicket in the final innings, this is a proper multi-starrer blockbuster from the visitors who have claimed parity in the series.

Now, think about the 430 runs scored by Shubhman Gill in the test match. Those many runs are often not scored in an entire series but the Indian skipper has had a test match straight out of the dreams. He broke multiple records with his maiden double century in the first innings when he made 269, he then went on break some more as he notched up another 161 the second time. For the first time ever, India scored more than 1000 runs in a test match.

Of course, not to forget Mohammad Siraj's 6-er in the first innings who once again shone as the leader of the pace attack. His spell was instrumental in getting a mammoth first innings lead for India after which they did not look behind.

From the hosts' perspective, it was a mammoth performance from their wicketkeeper Jamie Smith who scored a total of 272 runs in the test match, the third-most by a keeper in any test. Smith scored an unbeaten 184* in the first innings and shared a gigantic 303-run partnership with Harry Brook who himself 158. However, besides that partnership England lost all their wickets in just over 100 runs.

From the heartbreak at Headingley to the heroics in Birmingham — India bounce back in style to level the series 1-1! Back of a length on the off-stump, Carse swings to the hills again but skied it. This time, Gill settles under at it short cover and clings on to safely to seal the deal.

Jadeja fails to dislodge Bashir again and so we go to Akash Deep once more. Can he complete his 10-er this time?
