Commentary

Five Test matches — each going down to the final day. We saw youngsters stepping up and immortalising themselves in cricketing folklore. We saw senior pros step up and enhance their reputations with performances that will be remembered for years to come. We even saw men with broken bodies step onto the field and fight it out for their teams. Tempers flared at times. There was some spice, some drama — but that only added to the flavour. But it finishes with an honourable handshake. It ends in a 2-2 draw — perhaps, fitting as no team deserved to lose — but there was far more in this saga that the fans will remember and tell generations about.

Ben Stokes (England captain): "It's difficult when you can't participate in a game, but, another hard-fought game, and it has been an amazing one to be part of! Disappointed that we couldn't win the series, but, an amazing series for sure! When it got to the situation it did, there wasn't a question in Chris Woakes' mind about going out to bat. He even wanted to make sure about which hand he would play of! And such character-display is what a series like this wants, doesn't it? Emotions do come out, and when you play out a series like this, India-England, with the nations' flags on the chests, well, it is only understandable. I hope my body recovers, but I'm really disappointed at not being able to play this game. But of course, there is another big series coming up in November, so, the rehab starts now. In such a big series, the quicks, whoever played, were up for the challenge. Yes the results were not quite always there for us, the situation wasn't ideal when our frontline bowler could not take further part, but Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton and company really stepped up!"

Captain Shubman Gill is India's Player of the Series. He says, "I think the way both the teams played in the entire series.... We always came to Day 5 not knowing which team will win. It shows that both brought their A-game. Having people like Siraj and Prasidh make captaincy easy. The idea was to keep the pressure on. Pressure makes people do what they don't want to do. Siraj is a captain's dream. Every captain wants a player like him. Feels very rewarding to have achieved this. One of the goals of my series was being the best batter of the series. I am happy to have done that. It was both mental and technical. If you're getting into good positions, you feel strong mentally. Over the last six weeks, I just told the team 'never give up.'"

Harry Brook has been adjudged England's Test Player of the Summer and England's Player of the Series. Here's what he has to say: Came into the day this morning very confident. Obviously had two very good players out there and I thought we'd get the runs. But the way the Indians fought back and the way Siraj bowled, he deserved to come out successful. We were thinking the ball would stiffen up a bit and the pitch would be flatter but with the overcast conditions and lights on, it zipped around. Siraj played all five Tests and bowled 85+ mph every hour. He was phenomenal. (On Woakes) He was always going to go out no matter what. Credit to him. Unfortunate that we didn't get across the line. Cricket, isn't it? (Thought the game was in the bag yesterday?) Absolutely. So many things you can think in hindsight. We were going really well and if we had got a couple of overs there when I got out, the game was done. But as we've seen so many times this series anything can happen. My thought process was just hit as many runs as possible. If we needed 40 runs with me and Rooty in there and I get out the game's still done. Hindsight is a beautiful thing. I'll always back myself to play that shot. Could have won that game yesterday which is devastating but I'm just happy to contribute to as many games as possible. It's been a very intense series. After every game we've been absolutely knackered. We've not left anything out there. I know we've finished on the wrong side here but this is Test cricket. Hope people keep watching it!

Mohammed Siraj (Player of the Match, 9 wickets in the game and a fifer in the 2nd innings): "I feel so amazing! From Day One till here, everyone fought hard, and then this result, we are very, very happy! The plan is simple, to keep it consistently in the right areas and everything would take care of itself! I woke up, took a photo out of Google, saying 'Believe', and stuck to it! That dropped catch was a critical moment, had I taken that catch, it would be done much earlier. Harry Brook played really well! I was crestfallen at Lord's! But Ravindra Jadeja, Jaddu bhai, told be to back my defense, told me to think about my father, but, it was not to be! I don't know about the promotion in the police though!"

Five Test matches. Each of them went down to the last day. And it was only fitting that we had a finalé that went down the wire too. We thought that India were in the driver's seat when Pope got out yesterday. Then, Brook and Root stitched a partnership that put England ahead. And as they seemingly entered the homestretch, drama ensued. England collapsed, India came back. Even the rain gods decided to tune in and we had to go to Day 5.

Today, it started off with two boundaries of the first two balls. The morale among the Indian supporters must have started dipping. But then, Siraj delivered! He dismissed Jamie Smith — who was touted to be England's protagonist today — and then, the other Jamie. But England were not going to give up without a fight. Atkinson stood firm. Woakes came out to bat with his arm in a sling. They even brought the hosts close. But once again, Siraj came delivered! Speared in a yorker that will be talked about for ages. India win.

It has been a series that has had it all. Remember, how it started? India came in with a young team, as the underdogs. Most expected them to be mauled. But they turned the tide on Day 1 itself — with centuries from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. They were ahead in that entire match, but on the last day, England scripted a heist at Headingley.

Then, we witnessed Gill's extraordinaire at Edgbaston, the slow burn at Lord's which culminated in a dramatic finish and India's miraculous escape at Manchester. The fifth Test had to give us something special to top it.... and it did. Let us not forget Jaiswal's hundred or Washington Sundar's quick fifty or India's new number 4 Akash Deep's 66.In a six-run win, every little thing matters.

In the end, both teams can hold their heads high. 2-2 is a fitting result.

Let's now hear it from the calm and composed, KL Rahul: "I've played cricket for a while, I've played the Champions Trophy, I've seen India lift the World Cup, but, for us as a Test team which wasn't given any chance in the series, this is something we can be proud of! This should be it, this should be it as far as the change goes in the team. It means a lot to me! Once I joined the team, it hit me that some of the players I played with for so long aren't here, but, I realized quickly that I have stepped into a different role and have to shoulder much more responsibility! Shubman Gill has worked hard on building connections with the players, which goes unnoticed. His own batting, well, it got taken to a whole new level! He is here to stay as a leader!"
