Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage of New Zealand's tour of England this year. We hope you enjoyed the same - it was certainly a gripping set of 8 matches across formats! Both teams have had quite a few questions answered - New Zealand dealt with a few hard ones - and those might help them as they gear up to face each other in the opening game of World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad, just like in 1996. New Zealand's next assignment will be a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh - one that'll help them settle in to the conditions in the sub-continent. Jos Buttler and his teammates pose with the trophy now. A series win of such nature will certainly do a world of good. They've used their bench strength to the fullest - in the series, that is - using all 15 of their players over the course of 4 matches. As Buttler mentioned in the presentation, England have had significant improvement in all departments over the course of the series, and the fact that most of them have come without some of their key players makes it all the more better!

Jos Buttler (England captain): We've got better and better throughout the series, we spoke about the style of play and lived true to that and got the results. He's (Malan) played fantastically well whenever given the opportunity, goes out and makes his mark. Today was a fantastic hundred, he read the game very, very well. 311 was a really good score at Lord's, the wicket might have been a little slow, hitting the good areas might have caused hard work for the batters, good toss to win. We needed to get off to a good start with the ball, we did that and managed to pick up some wickets and put the opposition under pressure. I thought our spinners bowled brilliantly today. Great to see that, they are really valuable cricketers, to be able to bat and bowl like that gives you great depth. We're not trying to defend anything, we're looking to go to India and win a World Cup, exactly the same position as other teams. Exciting times, looking forward to these events.

Tom Latham (New Zealand Captain)- Yes, it was a difficult day. The guys stepped up under different circumstances. The batters couldn't build partnerships and it's not ideal. Daryl Mitchell did a great job by coming in and bowling 6 overs. Fingers crossed on Southee's fitness and he will be accessed in the coming days. (On Rachin Ravindra) He batted really well and he had opportunities right through the series and it's great to see him bat like this. When you get to the World Cup, it's slightly different. Kane is progressing well and it's nice to have him part of our set up to support us

Dawid Malan (Player of the Match & Series) - It's good fun especially at the home of cricket. It's good to score runs here. The pitch is slow and I thought I got away with a few early. Whenever they build pressure, I found it hard to score But Jos came in and we build the partnership and then get the scoreboard going. It got us into a position where we could get to 300, which we thought is a fantastic score. It's a fantastic start and to break into this white ball ODI and T20 team, you have to be a freak and be consistent. And that's the only way you can sort of get into this 15-man squad. I was gutted in the last game and I tought I'd done the hard work to get myself set for a big score and then to get out the way is obviously disappointing. And then to come back here and to back it up especially at the home of Cricket is fantastic. It's a dream come true to be part of the World Cup and will look to score runs If I get the opportunity out there.

Yet another series win for Jos Buttler, Matthew Mott and this new England team management! They might be dished out contrasting conditions in the World Cup in a couple of months, but a series win of this nature, with some key players away, has answered more questions for England than what they had in mind.

Once again, they have shaped their batting line-up to good effect before a World Cup, the new-ball duo of David Willey and Reece Topley have proven to be beneficial, and of course, with Moeen Ali completing his quota of overs on a regular basis, England have one spin option worthy of bowling 10 overs.

New Zealand started off rather well in the series, but their batting line-up just didn't have any answers against this England attack. Willey and Topley troubled them to no end with their movement - both off the air and the deck, making stroke-play a tough task. By the time the two left-armers completed their first spell, New Zealand saw their top-order back in the shed, and a second duo of pacers taking control of proceedings.

The same was the case today - the New Zealand line-up couldn't crack the code at all. While Will Young and Devon Conway looked to grind down and put up a fight, trying to see off Willey and Topley, a silly call for a run from Conway came in the way, and a promising opening stand was broken. Willey then darted the ball away from Young, induced an outside edge, and both openers were back in the hut in no time.

While Brydon Carse hit the right notes having been introduced into the attack shortly after the powerplay, Sam Curran went for a few having been guilty of dropping the ball too short on occasions. England then turned to their spin duo of Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, and surprisingly, the New Zealand batters decided on adopting a rather circumspect approach. That maybe had to do with the fact that they had a few handers facing up, but it certainly didn't work in their favour.

Moeen Ali went on to register figures of 4 for 50 in his 10 overs. For large parts of his spell, though, he maintained an economy of just under 4 an over, which tells a tale in itself. Livingstone mixed his off and leg breaks quite well, but it was a rank full toss which handed him his only wicket of the day. Rachin Ravindra went on a brief belated rampage, but Curran closed things out with a searing off-stump yorker, and in the process, saw an end to the formalities. The presentations are now underway...

It was a brave effort, but it came far too late for the Blackcaps. Looks like Southee won't bat, the players shake hands, and so, England end their home summer with a ODI series win over New Zealand!
