Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain): "Very proud! I thought it was a good game of cricket, and I think the ones who came in to watch were entertained! I think we got a competitive score on the board, we would have taken that after being in a tricky position. Our fielding was much better, Keshav Maharaj showed again why he is the best in the world. A guy like Corbin Bosch gave us a lot of control. We don't have a lot of options at the moment, given the injuries, but we'll go down to Southampton and look to put together our best team."
Harry Brook (England Captain) : "They probably got 10-15 runs too many but to get within a shot of their score has been a great effort. Bethell's decision was to unsettle their spin bowling plans. I thought we were unlucky in the power play, it did not go our way at the start, there were plenty of plays and misses, but we will take what happens. We will look for minor improvements, our focus will be to pick early wickets which can put us in better situations earlier in the game."
Matthew Breetzke (Player of the Match, 85 runs off 77 balls): "We found it a bit tricky up front, Tristan Stubbs and me. But as we got along, the wicket got better. England come precariously close! We have been treated to an absolutely thriller! Only the 2nd ODI series win for South Africa against England in England! The last time that they did it was back in 1998! This was always going to be a tough chase for England at a venue when a score in excess of 300 has been successfully chased down only once. The sole silver lining from the opening ODI for England's batting group, Jamie Smith, left the scene in the first ball of the chase. South Africa couldn't have asked for a better start.
The outfield had quickened since the morning as Ngidi's opening spell was relatively expensive before Root took Burger for 3 consecutive boundaries in the 7th over. After the early wicket, England were able to consistently maintain a healthy scoring rate as the 2nd wicket stand went past 50. The scoreboard continued to move, despite the fact that it wasn't the most fluent of starts for Ben Duckett, whose first 25 balls only saw 11 runs being scored. Corbin Bosch's first 3 overs only conceded 2 runs. That probably played a role as Keshav Maharaj benefited on the other hand when he put Duckett out of his misery, owing to an unsuccessful reverse sweep that saw the English opener's woodwork getting dismantled behind him.
It was an intriguing battle between Jacob Bethell and Aiden Markram. The young batter put the marker down on the off-spinner, applying some pressure back on South Africa. England brought up the team century in the 18th over, earlier than the time their opponents had taken. It was an audacious display of stroke-play as Bethell scored 41 runs when the stand between him and Root reached 50 off only 35 balls. Bethell tore apart Keshav Maharaj, taking him for 20 runs - most expensive in the career of the top ranked ODI bowler in the world. Root brought up his 43rd ODI fifty in the 20th over. It was also the joint-highest record of any English batter when it came to ODI half centuries against South Africa - Root joined Alex Hales as both now have scored 6 fifty plus scores against the Proteas.
Corbin Bosch returned to provide the crucial breakthrough, sending back Bethell. This prompted the re-introduction of Keshav Maharaj into the attack, who made amends for the early leakage by deceiving Joe Root through his guile at the brink of the halfway point of the chase. Buttler and Brook chose their battles wisely en-route their half century stand. They were circumspect in negotiating with their most prominent threat, Keshav Maharaj. They had one less head ache to think about when the ace spinner completed his spell in the 33rd over. The experienced English duo began targeting bowlers very specifically, making meaningful progress in the chase.
And then suddenly against the run of play, Muthuswamy found vicious spin and bounce to dismiss Harry Brook, putting an end to an extremely significant 69 run stand for the 5th wicket. Buttler continued the attack from his end, bringing up his 28th ODI fifty. But the big moment arrived through a fantastic slower ball by Lungi Ngidi that cleaned up Jos Buttler who was the 6th wicket to fall and the required rate touching 10 runs per over for the last 7 and a half overs. It did not help the home side when no boundaries were scored for 5 overs between the 39th and 44th over. Will Jacks and Jofra Archer provided a scare with their innings.
The rearguard action almost established parity for the hosts but at the end, this is another series win for Temba Bavuma's men who have turned up with a lot of diligence in the English shores.
