They say, "all good things come to an end" and so does our coverage for this entertaining three-match ODI series. England players will now have a bit of break and then feature in The Hundred next month. As of now, they do not have any more ODIs scheduled before the World Cup in September-October.
India would be playing a three-match series against Australia at home right before the marquee tournament. Of course, we will be there to call it. For now, it is the commentary duo of Darpan Tikiya and Meeth Agrawal waving goodbye. Sayonara!
8:52 PM local time, 1:22 AM IST | Harmanpreet Kaur joins her mates, each of whom have donned their medals and are posing behind the banner that reads "WINNERS". She hands the trophy to Kranti Goud and the celebrations begin. The support staff joins them and Jemimah steps forward to click a selfie that you'll probably be able to find on social media.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series. She says, "(On winning both the T20 and ODI series) Great moment for all of us. I am really happy with the way we played both the series. Credit to the support staff. We are gelling well. They all (the players) have been really great on the field and off the field. Whenever they get the opportunities, they grab it with both the hands. The way we have been preparing is reflecting. (On youngsters Shree Charani and Kranti Goud) They got some experience in the WPL. They have been the strike bowlers for their respective teams. The way Kranti bowled today was great to see.
"(On the fielding) Credit goes to Munish (Bali) sir, our fielding coach. When you work hard you get the rewards on the field. It was a very important match for us. (On her batting) I had been working hard. I knew when the time will come I'd put in a good performance. I want to dedicate this innings for my dad. I was feeling some pressure, but I knew when the time will come, I will get the runs.
The wicket was really good to bat on. But we knew that if we keep putting on the pressure, there will be our opportunities coming our way. Some came to us, we did not grab them. But then, Deepti took the wicket of Sciver-Brunt and turned it around. This series was very important for preparing for the World Cup. We always take one game at a time and that really helps. We still have three matches against Australia before the World Cup."
Natalie Sciver-Brunt [England Captain]: We did well to go until the end and stay in the game that long. Losing wickets at the end cost us & a set batter there would have helped our cause. In the first innings, we let many runs go through and weren't disciplined enough. We can work well on a combination of many things. The training has been good, but we are missing bringing it out in the matches. The energy in the team is driven by the senior and that is something we want work in training as well in terms of developing that intensity.
We don't have the luxury of all-rounders in the lineup and thus we are trying to find the right balance. My plan it to bowl at the World Cup but until then we are trying using five bowlers to give everyone the chance to showcase themselves in different situations. India are a world class side and were brilliant across fielding and bowling.
Amy Jones, who was promoted to opening the innings this home season, is England's Player of the Summer. She says, "Loved the role and enjoyed it. Feels like a lot of summer is still left to play. India are a tough side, and it's good to play against the best. The biggest thing is probably mindset. Looking ahead at my job for World Cup is to take on the opening bowlers."
8:38 PM local time, 1:08 AM IST | Time for the post-series presentation.
8:24 PM local time, 12:54 AM IST | India Women win the match by 13 runs and the series by 2-1.
The past one week has been nothing short of a thrilling rollercoaster ride. Splendid catches, sloppy drops, controversial umpiring decisions, some excellent batting and some impressive bowling — this series had it all. We saw senior players coming back into form and youngsters breaking through too. It was only fitting that the decider went down the wire.
In the end, India benefitted from having the cushioning of a few extra runs that could be attributed to Richa Ghosh's blitzkrieg towards the end of the batting innings and the team's overall fielding. But the headline act was the skipper's stately hundred.
Harmanpreet Kaur started watchfully. She had not scored a run off her first 10 balls. But ended the day with a handsome strike rate of 121.43 against her name. Apart from her fluent shot-making, what stood out was her decisiveness. She hardly took a risk against Sophie Ecclestone — who once again proved to be England's best bowler of the day returning 1/28 in 10 overs — but showed no mercy to others.
The other prominent story was that of Kranti Goud, who might not have even got a game had Renuka Thakur, Pooja Vatsrakar and Titas Sadhu not been injured. She rocked England early with a couple of wickets and then, returned to finish with six to her name. However, the hosts must be lauded for the fight they put in between. Natalie Sciver-Brunt once again got runs — scoring a delightful 98. Youngsters Emma Lamb and Alice Davidson-Richards too impressed with their knocks. Perhaps, the runout of Sophie Dunkley proved to be the difference.
Special mention to Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a sprightly fifty and took a couple of stunning catches towards the end too. Talking of spectacular catches, Deepti Sharma's blinder to dismiss Amy Jones might be doing rounds on social media in the upcoming days.
Lauren Bell has been dismissed for 7 runs off 4 balls
49.5 Kranti Goud to Lauren Bell, GONE! Six-fer for Krant Goud! What a moment this is for the youngster from Madhya Pradesh. Good length ball outside off, and Lauren Bell goes for a mighty smash, looking to send it over extra cover. But she finds the fielder there, who makes no mistake, collecting an easy catch!
And with that, it's all over! India win by 13 runs and take the series 2-1! What a thrilling end to the series, a dominant bowling display sealed by a star performance from Kranti Goud.
That is Lauren Bell's first six in international cricket.
England Women Scored 300 runs in 49.4 overs
49.4 Kranti Goud to Lauren Bell, SIX!!! In the slot and Bell smacks it cleanly in the gap at cow corner for a maximum. Too late now but!
49.3 Kranti Goud to Linsey Smith, fuller again on the stumps, played to long on.
49.2 Kranti Goud to Lauren Bell, full on the leg stump, smashed uppishly to long on for one.
49.1 Kranti Goud to Linsey Smith, hat-trick ball, a superb yorker just outside off stump. Linsey Smith does well to get her bat down in time, managing to drag it to point for a single.
Runs in around the wicket.
Kranti Goud on a hat-trick.
Into the final over. 26 runs to get. India's game to lose. But hey! "Game of uncertainties.." something, something.
