Mitchell Santner (New Zealand captain): "Wickets in the power play is always great! Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes were nightmarish with the new ball! England bat deep, but those early wickets helped a lot. Getting Harry Brook early would be nice, but, he played brilliantly! Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell were the ones to seal the deal with the bat for us."
Harry Brook (England captain): "To get 3-4 wickets in the power play is great, but, the talking point for us is to take wickets through the middle. We knew that it would seam around, but they managed to bowl the right lengths, better than us. We can also learn how to go about our work with pacing the innings. We want to try and take it to the bowlers, there are no half-measures, but, we want to be clear how to do it."
Harry Brook (Player of the Match, 135 runs off 101 balls ): "I felt like I was in good touch. I counter-punched and it came off today. I've done it a few times, thankfully it worked again today. I still think that the score was defendable. But, we couldn't do well on the follow-up after our start."
8:38 PM local time (1:08 PM IST): Time for the post-match presentation!
New Zealand (224/6) defeat England (223) by 4 wickets in the first ODI
New Zealand possibly did not expect to have to chase 223 with the England innings in tatters at 56-6. A truly magnificent and fearless knock of 135 from Harry Brook enabled the English to post a fighting total on a pitch that was doing a lot. It wasn't easy for the Black Caps, even as Rachin Ravindra took the England bowlers on before perishing for a run a ball 17. Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell steadied the ship before nearing a century partnership - Mitchell benefiting from a dropped catch by Joe Root while having scored just a couple of runs. A seemingly needless run out led to Bracewell's dismissal, giving England a bit of a chance at tilting the scales. Mitchell Santner, however, weathered a bit of the storm before seeing his side through in the opening one-dayer of the series.
Brydon Carse took three valuable wickets but also conceded valuable runs in the form of wides and no-balls. Despite the loss, English fans will no doubt cherish Brook's knock as a one-of-a-kind performance on a difficult surface.
36.4 Adil Rashid to Daryl Mitchell, SIX MORE! AND NEW ZEALAND TAKE THE LEAD IN THE SERIES! Into the pitch and way too slow outside leg. Mitchell rocked back, got into a great position and slammed it way over long-leg to finish the match!
36.3 Adil Rashid to Daryl Mitchell, flat and short on off-stump. Bunted around to the mid-wicket from the back foot, but the timing was off!
36.2 Adil Rashid to Daryl Mitchell, SIX RUNS! Flighted around off-stump. Mitchell steps out and hammers it way over long-on for a maximum!
36.1 Adil Rashid to Daryl Mitchell, flighted on off-stump and on the good length. Mitchell sweeps it rather premeditatedly and gets it over the in-field down to deep square for one.
