Commentary

As the series comes to a close, both sides would look back and reflect on it with mixed feelings. While Pakistan have tried a few different things, they would be particularly proud of how their bowlers were able to pull things back tonight. On the other hand, despite a drawn result, the young New Zealand team would go back home with a lot more positives. With the World Cup looming, the analysis of this series would serve as a base for laying the foundation for the final preparations for the marquee tournament. Both Babar Azam and Michael Bracewell have smiles on their faces as they pick the trophy up together. The teams come together for a combined photoshoot with the silverware.

Babar Azam (Pakistan Captain): We rotate the bowlers according to the situation. Early on, there was swing for the fast bowlers. When Usama started bowling, we realised there was something for the spinners too. Sometimes having too many options can be a bit of a problem. But we used them well. 4 spinners and 4 pacers bowled. You see, Saim bowled in the powerplay. So I think we did well. When the ball goes old and the dew settles in, the cutters stick to the surface. I think we got a par score but we needed 15-20 runs more I reckon. We tried different combinations through the series. We tried different orders and different players in both batting and bowling.

Michael Bracewell (New Zealand Captain): I think it's a pretty fair reflection of the series. It's been a very close faught series. We learnt on how to play in these conditions. Credit to Pakistan, they played brilliantly today. Usama Mir and Shaheen Afridi bowled brilliantly. We lost crucial wickets in the middle overs. Exposing the guys to some world class player, especially the way the debutants have gone about their business has been heartening to see. Yeah it's always a great challenge. You play against some great players and very different to the conditions we get in home. The way we adapted was great.

Now let us see what the captains have got to say.

Shaheen Afridi: The aim is always to get wickets whenever I am handed over the ball. When New Zealand was bowling the ball was staying low. Stuck to length deliveries and got success. In the last two overs I try to reverse the ball but Yorker is the best ball in any format. One wicket for the team is very important.

Shaheen Afridi is the Player of the Match as well as the Player of the Series.

PHEWW! That chase was a bit of a rollercoaster, wasn't it? It started off with Blundell displaying the guts to charge at Shaheen Afridi with the new ball and hit him for four. He was bowled the next ball.

Tim Seifert who seemed rusty to begin things, somehow found his mojo in the middle and smashed some powerful strokes on his way to a 33-ball-52. While him and the skipper were out there in the middle, it seemed as if New Zealand are going to chase it down with a few overs to spare.

But then, the spinners came on. Usama Mir led the fightback with a wicket maiden and then, the experienced duo of Shadab and Imad chipped in with a wicket apiece. New Zealand lost their way in the middle but Neesham and Clarkson kept the hopes alive. A quick, counter-attacking partnership seemed to develop.

However, then Afridi was summoned again. He picked up 3 wickets in the second spell to rock the New Zealand batting. The game was still not over though. Josh Clarkson kept on fighting. The blackcaps got 30 runs from overs 17 to 19. The kind of form Mohammad Amir had put on show, it seemed as if getting a dozen of the last over was not going to be a stiff ask.

But, Clarkson "ran out" of partners. (Pun Intended.) Pakistan do level the series, but New Zealand's young side has more positives to take out of this tour.

19.2 Mohammad Amir to Josh Clarkson, hit down to long on and they come back for two. RUN OUT!! GAME. SET. MATCH. Clarkson knew he had to try and get the strike back. They tried running back for a run that wasn't there. Amir was calm, collected the throw and whipped the bails off with O'Rourke being a mile away still. Pakistan win. The series is drawn 2-2.
