Target blocks are generated naturally in the world and can also be easily crafted using a few resources.

Before the 1.19 update, these blocks did not generate anywhere in the world. It was only after Mojang Studios added ancient cities to the game did the target block started generating naturally. In an ancient city, you can find a secret room hidden right underneath the city center's warden statue. This secret room will have all kinds of redstone contraptions.

While it enriches the lore of an ancient city that is fascinating zto learn on its own, you can find a redstone contraption with a target block.

Of course, going all the way down to the spooky structure is not the best way to get a target block. You can also craft it using four redstone dusts and a hay bale. While the former can be obtained by mining redstone ore, the latter can be crafted using nine wheat or from villages.

As the block's name and design clearly indicate, it is something that you can hit with any projectile. The special feature is that it can emit a redstone signal every time it is hit. The projectiles that will affect the block are arrows, tridents, eggs, snowballs, splash potions, fire charges from a player, dispensers, firework rockets, etc. The redstone signal would be stronger if a projectile is closer to the block.

The target block emits a redstone tick of 10 only if it is hit with an arrow or trident. Apart from that, it will only emit four redstone ticks.

In Java Edition exclusively, the target block changes its state whenever hit. Hence, an observer can detect the change in the block state and emit a redstone signal of its own.
