Before 2022, getting Minecraft Java or Bedrock Edition used to be a choice. But then Mojang Studios released an update that bundled both versions in one package. This means that whenever you buy Minecraft, you get both versions in the same package.

So if you have bought the game after 7 June 2022, you already have both versions. To access it, just open Minecraft Launcher and go to the the ‘Play’ page. Here, instead of a ‘Buy’ button for those who have not bought the game, you will find a ‘Get’ button. Click on it and then you shall have the other version of the game.

Another common question that comes is what if you have bought the game before June of 2022? Back then, both versions of the game used to be sold separately. So if you had bought the Java version, getting Bedrock is quite easy. You do not have to buy the game. As announced in the release note, Mojang offered both versions of the game for free if you owned any version of it already.

The process of getting the Bedrock version of the game is the same here as well. Open the launcher and then click on the ‘Get’ button. In case there are some issues or the message asks you to buy the Bedrock version of the game, it is better to contact Mojang and get it sorted from their end.

Coming to the finer details of the differences between the two versions, the level generation method is mostly what sets them apart. Other than that, some game mechanics differ, along with mod compatibility. Generally, Java Edition is the preferred version of the game since it is compatible with most of the mods and has been proven to be very stable. On the other hand, the Bedrock edition is considered to be filled with bugs.
