Smooth stone is a really easy block to get your hands on early in the game, and a lot of players use it to create foundations for their Minecraft bases and homes.
Â
Because the block is so basic, with little to no texture or color variation, itâs a great base block for anyone wanting to make towers, cities, or anything of that sort.
Â
The materials you will need in order to craft a torch are:Â
Â
To make smooth stone, the first block you will need is a furnace. The first step to making a furnace is collecting 8 cobblestone from out in your minecraft world.Â
Â
Once you have collected all of your cobblestone for your project, add eight pieces per furnace you wish to create. If itâs a larger project, itâs suggested that you have multiple furnaces to expedite the process.Â
Â
Depending on how you plan to use the smooth stone, the amount of furnaces you may need differs. If youâre only making smooth stone for a blast furnace or two, youâre fine with one furnace. If youâre making a building out of it, however, it may be best to have a furnace for every stack of cobblestone that you have collected.
Â
Once you have collected your materials, you can go on to create your furnaces. This guide explains more about how to make a furnace.
Â
Now that youâve created your furnace(s), you can proceed to making your smooth stone.
Â
To make a Smooth stone in Minecraft, you need to double smelt your cobblestone in a furnace. Right-clicking the furnace will bring you to the furnaceâs GUI as shown in below picture:
Â
After opening the GUI, fill the top left-most space of the furnace with your cobblestone. This will allow you to smelt it into stone once you add your fuel.
Â
In the available space under your block of choice, put your form of fuel. This can be coal, charcoal, a bucket of lava, or anything made of wood. This will fuel the furnace to smelt your cobblestone into stone.
Now you must wait for the arrow to fill completely. The arrow in the center of the furnace menu is an indicator to show how far along the furnace is in the smelting process.Â
Â
This bar fills up individually for every block placed into the furnace. Once this bar is completely full, it will reset. Then your cobblestone will be fully converted to stone and will be ready to be removed from the furnace.
Once you have collected all of your new stone from your furnace(s), you must put it back in the furnace in the same slot that you put the cobblestone in before. Smelting the stone for a second time will convert it into smooth stone.
In the available space under your stone, put your form of fuel as shown:
Now you must wait for the arrow to fill completely. After one block has been completed, you will be able to hover your cursor over it and see that you have made smooth stone!

Smooth stone can be used on its own as a building block, or it can be used in two different crafting recipes.
Smooth stone is the base block for the blast furnace crafting recipe; alongside iron ingots and a furnace, smooth stone is used to create the fastest smelting device the game has at the moment. Its crafting recipe is displayed below.
Smooth stone can also be used to create smooth stone slabs, by placing three of them in a row in a crafting table. These blocks are decorative building blocks that many players use. The crafting recipe for smooth stone slabs is displayed below.
Congratulations! Youâve made your first batch of smooth stone. Smooth stone is a great building block for modern, industrial, and futuristic builds, as well as being used in crafting recipes. Although it does take time to make, as the smelting time isn't straightforward, itâs completely worth it in the end!
