Minecraft developers were often scoffed at by fans for not adding exciting features to the game. However, with the past few updates, Mojang has revealed brilliant features such as wolf variants, wolf armor, armadillos, crafters, and more, turning many doubters into fans.

This is far from the end, as Mojang Studios has been working on future updates, and fans can already try some of the planned changes as part of experimental features in the game before the official release. In this article, players can learn about all the experimental features available in Minecraft as of 2024.

What are the experimental features in Minecraft?

Unlike most games, Mojang prefers to let Minecraft fans try out upcoming features to gain feedback from the community. Some updates can be quite drastic for the game and require a longer development time before release. This is where experimental features, known as experimental gameplay in Bedrock Edition, come into play.

Mojang releases features and changes as part of an experimental data pack, which can be turned on while creating a new world. Once developers think the features are close to ready, they usually add them to snapshots and beta/preview releases. Let's look at what experimental features are available in Minecraft right now.

Experimental features in Minecraft Java Edition

Java Edition has four experimental features available for players to select while creating a new world. These experiments are located under Experiments in the More tab on the Create New World screen.

1) Bundles

Bundles were first announced for the 1.17 Caves & Cliffs update around four years ago, but have since been delayed. Mojang has finally announced that the highly anticipated bundles are in development and will be released in an upcoming update. Developers have already added bundles as an experimental feature in both Java and Bedrock Editions.

It has been a long time since minecarts received any major update, and Mojang has finally decided to give a makeover. This experimental feature adds a new command to increase the max speed of minecarts and further optimizes their movements for a smoother experience while riding them.

3) Redstone experiments

The developer generally avoids making redstone changes as they can break the intricate farms and contraptions designed by redstone engineers. However, with redstone experiments, a few redstone items are being changed for the better.

The main focus of redstone experiments is the improvement of redstone wires made from redstone dust. It changes the order and way in which redstone wires update the blocks around them.

4) Villager trade rebalancing

Out of all experimental features, villager trade rebalancing is the most important, as it affects one of the game's most popular features. Most players would agree that the villager trading system makes progression too easy.

With villager trade rebalancing, Mojang is nerfing librarians, toolsmiths, armorsmiths, and weaponsmiths, while improving cartographers by adding village locator maps. This rebalance will prevent players from gaining the best enchantments and equipment early by trading.

In Bedrock Edition, you can turn on experiments while creating a new world. Select Experiments on the Create World screen and turn on your preferred experiment(s) under Gameplay.

Unfortunately, Bedrock players only have access to the villager trade rebalancing at the time of writing. Developers will add the other experiments from Java to Bedrock in the future.

In the meantime, feel free to explore the villager trade rebalances and see if you like the new trades and changes. Mojang is looking for community feedback before making these experiments a part of the default gameplay.
