Georges St-Pierre, Valentina Shevchenko and Stephen Thompson: UFC stars as DC heroes

The UFC is home to most of the world's greatest mixed martial artists. Fighters who compete under Dana White's banner enjoy more attention than any other group of combat sports athletes.

While the UFC has had more success than any of its rivals, the same cannot be said for the film adaptations of DC Comics.

Despite being a giant in the comic book industry, DC Comics has failed to reach anywhere near the cinematic heights that Marvel has achieved on the silver screen. Even with household names like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, DC has been thoroughly defeated by Marvel in the cinematic arena.

Regardless, DC's characters still remain iconic. Superman and Batman have been culturally relevant for decades due to their numerous appearances across comic books and animated shows. This list finds parallels of 5 UFC stars in the DC universe.

#5. Donald Cerrone, UFC lightweight - Aquaman

Donald Cerrone has very little in common with the comic book version of Aquaman. Instead, it is the Atlantean superhero's cinematic avatar in recent DC films that is most similar to 'Cowboy'.

The film version is reminiscent of a good-natured outlaw, which matches the former lightweight's description.

Furthermore, 'Cowboy' has been defined by his failure to capture a UFC title. While the MMA legend is a successful action fighter, he's always remained below the very top of every division he competed in, similar to Aquaman's storyline.

While he's a prominent member of the Justice League, he has always ranked below the likes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder woman.

#4. Shavkat Rakhmonov, UFC welterweight - Batman

The similarities between Shavkat Rakhmonov and Batman might not become immediately apparent. However, the two men are quite similar. While 'The Nomad' doesn't possess Batman's deep pool of wealth and resources, there are parallels to be considered.

The UFC welterweight is, like Batman in Gotham City, a looming and oft-avoided presence in his division. He is a supernaturally skilled martial artist who is competent in every phase of unarmed combat.

Furthermore, he defeats all of his opponents with surgical efficiency. Like Batman, he also stays out of the spotlight - into the shadows. He does so while maintaining a silent disposition that reflects his cold confidence, much like Batman.

#3. Stephen Thompson, UFC welterweight - The Flash

Stephen Thompson is a long-lasting staple of the UFC welterweight division. The two-time title challenger is among the finest strikers in MMA history. His breadth of striking skills is magnified by his blistering speed. Even with his 40th birthday just a month away, 'Wonderboy' remains as fast as ever.

He fought Kevin Holland on an ESPN card a month ago. During the bout, 'Trailblazer', who often enjoys a speed advantage over his foes, was stunned at how much faster 'Wonderboy' was than himself. The Flash's primary superpower is his unrivaled speed. But it's not just the speed that links the two men.

The Flash is often depicted as having a cheerful and positive disposition. Stephen Thompson is very similar to him in this respect.

#2. Valentina Shevchenko, UFC flyweight - Wonder Woman

No other women's MMA fighter is more synonymous with Wonder Woman than Valentina Shevchenko. The reigning UFC flyweight queen is a multi-faceted fighter with a deep pool of skills that extends beyond the world of martial arts. She is a speaker of several languages, including English, Spanish and Russian.

Similarly, Wonder Woman is multilingual and capable of speaking several languages. This enabled the Amazonian to work as a diplomat, 'Bullet' herself has citizenship in different countries and is a skilled marksmen with a gun in her hand.

Additionally, Wonder Woman is also a highly skilled martial artist, much like Valentina Shevchenko. She seems all but unstoppable compared to most of her Justice League teammates, with the exception of Superman. The same is true for Valentina Shevchenko, who is perhaps one of the greatest women's MMA fighters to ever live.

#1. Georges St-Pierre, former UFC welterweight - Superman

A very small selection of fighters represents the pinnacle of MMA. Among these legendary mixed martial artists, the one who closely resembles Superman is Georges St-Pierre. As a former two-division champion with a plethora of records, 'Rush' is arguably the greatest fighter of all time.

In a similar vein, Superman is often touted as the greatest hero in the world. His abilities are unmatched, much like 'GSP' was an unmatched force during his reign over the welterweight division.

From a personality perspective, their similarities are even greater. 'GSP' and Superman both have a gentle outer veneer and are extremely soft-spoken. They seldom lose their tempers, even in the heat of battle.

The welterweight GOAT always conducts himself in a polite and respectful manner. Various accounts from fighters and coaches describe the Canadian great as kind and warm-hearted.

The similarities between him and Superman extend beyond even that. 'GSP' is a source of inspiration for many MMA fighters who strive to achieve the same level of success that he did. Similarly, Superman is an inspiration to many other heroes who revere him greatly.
