There is always a fair amount of fanfare for a Jon Jones fight, but the forthcoming UFC 285 fight against Ciryl Gane has a sense of intrigue and anticipation around it. Jones dominated the light heavyweight division for over a decade and now faces Gane this weekend for the vacant heavyweight championship.

Jones faced some of the top contenders in the 205-pound division, compiling an unprecedented record in the process. He has defeated notable opponents like Daniel Cormier, Vitor Belfort, and Alexander Gustafsson, but there is still a blemish on his record: a disqualification defeat to Matt Hamill in 2009.

It is now widely known that Jon Jones has suffered a loss in his career. After dominating Matt Hamill in their bout on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale, 'Bones' decided to launch multiple 12-6 elbows on a downed opponent, in violation of the unified rules of mixed martial arts. The 12-6 elbow strike involves bringing the elbow up and dropping it straight down, striking the opponent with the tip of the elbow.

Jon Jones was promptly deducted a point and the bout was to continue, but Hamill was unable to compete due to a dislocated shoulder. Given that Hamill was unable to continue, Jones was disqualified for using 12-6 elbows, despite dominating the fight till the unfortunate end.

Check out the clip below:

In 28 professional bouts, Jones has amassed a record of 26 wins, 1 defeat, and 1 no-contest. While Jones originally won by knockout in the rematch against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, he was later tested positive for a banned drug. The fight was declared a no-contest, and Jones was stripped of his title.

What did Dana White say regarding the only loss Jon Jones has on his UFC record against Matt Hamill?

Jon Jones vs. Matt Hamill came to a disappointing conclusion as 'The Hammer' was unable to continue due to a dislocated shoulder. Prior to that, Jones was docked a point for multiple illegal 12-6 elbows, which are prohibited in mixed martial arts.

UFC president Dana White holds the opinion that Jones' record should be an undefeated one. Up until that point, Jon Jones had a perfect 9-0 record. This was his third bout under the UFC banner.

Speaking to the media after UFC on Versus 1, White stated:

"It shouldn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened that way. He shouldn't have lost, so it's unfortunate. It was a downward elbow, you take a point. Hamill couldn't continue because his shoulder was messed up. It had nothing to do with the elbow."

White added that he discussed erasing the loss from Jones' record with the Nevada Athletic Commission. Clearly, White's plea was denied by the commission and Jones had to carry the loss to Matt Hammil on his record.
