Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis have gone back and forth over their rehydration clause.

In the sport of boxing, business outside the ring is just as important as inside the ring. For example, seemingly every major matchup has a rematch clause attached to it these days. Many boxers won't even sign without a potential second matchup being on the table.

That sort of thing led Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis to go back and forth for months in negotiations. Despite the two lightweights announcing they'd verbally agreed to fight as far back as last November, the rematch clause, amongst others, held them back from announcing the fight until last month.

Along with that clause, there's also the controversial rehydration clause. The clause means that while the two men can cut weight, they have to come under 146 pounds on fight night. The fight is currently scheduled for a 136-pound catchweight.

During a recent interview with BoxingScene, Ryan Garcia gave his thoughts on the weight clause. There, he seemed to blast Gervonta Davis for the addition to their contracts:

“It just shows you what type of person he is. No integrity. No will to fight the best. No will to get the best version of me, but it doesn't matter. It can't stop what God has destined for me. I chose to make this fight happen. I didn't put myself first. I put the boxing fans first..."

Gervonta Davis hits back at Ryan Garcia

While Ryan Garcia is unhappy about the weight clause, Gervonta Davis believes it makes sense.

While 'Tank' and 'KingRy' have each spent the majority of their careers as lightweights, they're not both there as of now. The latter moved up in weight in April 2022 to the super lightweight division.

However, for the super fight this coming April in Las Vegas, the two men will meet in the middle. Davis, who also spoke about the weight clauses in an interview with Boxing Scene, put the blame on Garcia.

The WBA (Regular) lightweight champion stated that as a smaller man, he's already moving up in weight to face Ryan Garcia. With that in mind, Gervonta Davis believes the talk is overblown:

“I wanted the fight to be at 135 pounds. That's [my] weight class. He's the one that wanted to do it at a catchweight, trying to do it at 137, 138... They weren't going to take the fight if it wasn't at 136, or a catchweight. Why would I fight him at 140 if he's bigger than me? That don't make no sense."
