The idea of a new Warhammer MMO is a very exciting one, especially when it involves a well-known developer. This upcoming mystery MMO set in the Warhammer universe is being developed by Jack Emmert, a familiar name if you’ve played free-to-play MMOs in the 2000s. He’s worked on games like DC Universe Online, Neverwinter Online, Star Trek Online, and one of my personal favorite MMOs of all time - City of Heroes.

While information on this upcoming MMO is very scarce, it’s clear that the developer wants to do right by the IP and create something that will be enjoyable for fans of the Games Workshop property. Well, here's everything that we know about the new Warhammer MMO.

What we know about the upcoming Warhammer MMO from Jackalyptic Games

The upcoming Warhammer MMO from Jackalyptic Games is backed by NetEase, so the project will have solid funding. Despite being owned by NetEase, the developer confirmed that they have a fair degree of autonomy to design the game in a way that makes sense.

We do know for sure that the MMO is going to be developed in Unreal Engine 5. This is a good idea, because it takes a significant amount of time to create and perfect a game engine, and the tools for UE5 already exist. It may also be the first MMO to be developed in Unreal Engine 5, which is a fascinating concept.

Interestingly, it has also been confirmed that the Warhammer MMO is going to be focused on PVE. Although there’s no guarantee that there won’t be PVP, the primary goal will be to build an enjoyable PVE environment.

Some people might suggest that a PVP MMO would be better, but traditionally speaking, such MMOs don’t have the same level of success that their PVE counterparts do - look at World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14, versus Lineage 2. This isn’t to say that Lineage 2, or the more modern Throne and Liberty are bad. They just don’t have the same power and popularity.

Jack Emmert decided on a Warhammer MMO because it’s a franchise he’s incredibly passionate about. However, we don’t have a single clue about which era of Warhammer it’s going to be in. In fact, the game developer enjoys both the Fantasy and 40K eras and hasn’t made a public statement about the game's setting.

Whichever era it’s set in, we do know that action combat is going to be a focus, instead of more traditional MMOs. Jack Emmert has said in the past that he doesn’t want to go back to doing traditional MMOs. This could mean we’ll see something like Guild Wars 2’s combat, or even an Action RPG like Diablo 4 or Path of Exile. It’ll be interesting to see how it all shapes up.

It’s been several years since the Warhammer Online MMO shut down - it’s a game that has a very divisive opinion. Some claimed it to be a failure, and a World of Warcraft clone, while others miss it fondly, and play on private servers to keep the game alive.

We don’t know very much about this upcoming game, but we can say for certain it’s being worked on by a developer who loves the Games Workshop IP and wants to do right by it.
