In Ashes of Creation, as well as other MMOs, transmog options are incredibly important. Being able to customize your character’s armor and outfit is one of the most popular features in any online game. It shows a variety of things — how deep into the game you’ve gone, as well as what kind of fashion sense you have. Whether you play Warframe, World of Warcraft, or Final Fantasy 14, the endgame is always truly the same — it’s based around transmog/fashion systems.
Some MMOs even have weekly events built around it like Final Fantasy 14, or limited-time events where the goal is to be as creative as possible, like in World of Warcraft. Good news for Ashes of Creation fans though - there will be a transmog option for you.
Yes, Ashes of Creation will have transmog options in the form of Appearance Slots
Ashes of Creation will have a transmog system in the form of Appearance slots. This is used to change or copy the appearance of equipment in the game. The developers did state there are rules to the system - like level restrictions. The only exception to this are costumes, which are bought from the cosmetic store.
Costumes are one-piece outfits, like skins in various other games. You can’t mix and match with a Costume, but you can do so with appearance slots and other in-game gear. However, the developers have also stated there won’t be overtly sexual armor, weapons won’t be gigantic anime weapons, and the equipment in the game is intended to be functional and realistic.
This is for the sake of immersion, and while some costumes may be “more revealing”, there won’t be any exceptionally sexual gear for players to purchase or unlock in the game at the time of writing. What is interesting about equipment in Ashes of Creation and the transmog system is that there’s a racial component.
The developers have stated in the past that they want each race’s cultural style to play a factor in their gear. So, for example, the “Eagle set” will look different on an Orc, or an Elf. Each race has its own design standards and designs on equipment, so it will have a different style for each of the game’s races.
Cosmetic transmogs will be usable by all races in Ashes of Creation, but they will likely have varying differences due to racial influences. These things could always change as time goes on, as this MMORPG is still very much in development.
