Gamabunta’s Background

At some point when Gamabunta was younger, Jiraiya reverse summoned himself to Mount Myōboku and threw away a snake that Gamabunta was squaring off against in the hopes of discovering the animal he was naturally attached to. He was the one who later informed the young man that the Great Goad Sage was looking for him in order to give him a prophecy once he had started training with the toads.

He was later summoned by Jiraiya, alongside Manda and Katsuyu, during the Second Shinobi World War.

Much later, during Tobi’s invasion in Konoha, when the Nine-Tails was generating a Tailed Beast Ball, Minato summoned Gamabunta to assist him in stopping the Nine-Tails. The Nine-Tails was then carried outside the village by Minato while he instructed Gamabunta to hold it down. He was able to restrain the Fox until Minato transported it away, despite his complaints that he couldn’t do it for very long.

Part 1

Chūnin Exams

Gamabunta was summoned by Naruto when the latter was almost about to plummet to death, a case Gamabunta couldn’t believe since Naruto was just a child back then. Angered with his remark, Naruto asserted that he was the toad’s master because he had summoned Gamabunta. He became irritated at Naruto as a result and issued a death threat. This scared Naruto into submission, but he resolved to become the toad’s master.

Gamabunta was not particularly startled by the fact that Naruto had summoned him; otherwise, the boy wouldn’t have continued in trying to earn his respect. He also did not believe that Naruto had actually summoned him until he saw the summoning contract scroll. The toad boss transported Naruto to the hospital after he passed out while attempting to claim the toad as his own, leaving his footprints as a signature.

Konoha Crush

Naruto called forth Gamabunta during the assault on Konoha in order to avoid being crushed by Gaara’s Sand Waterfall Funeral. Although Gaara was in his complete Shukaku form, his personality was still in charge. Gamabunta declined to engage in combat, being his normal grouchy self. Naruto commanded him to treat him with deference as one of his followers.

He became even more irritated by this, claiming that he couldn’t take Naruto seriously and said that he was “too young to share sake with him”. Gamakichi then informed his father that Gaara had attempted to kill him and that Naruto had protected him after being unintentionally summoned by Naruto earlier. Gamabunta, being impressed with Naruto, formally accepted him as his subordinate, drew his tantō, saying, “I’ll show you plenty of honour-bound duty!”

Gamabunta was able to hold his own at first, but as soon as Gaara forced himself to fall asleep, Shukaku took control. Gaara hadn’t slept for very long, so Shukaku wasn’t at full strength. In spite of this, Gamabunta was able to control Shukaku. Gamabunta approached Gaara and punched Gaara to wake him up thanks to the use of a Combination Transformation by Naruto and Gamabunta to take on the form of the Nine-Tails. He was once more awestruck by Naruto and even mourned the fact that he would be unable to witness the conclusion of this conflict because he had exhausted his resources and needed to return home.

Search For Tsunade

Gamabunta and Katsuyu were called to the field where Jiraiya and Tsunade were battling Orochimaru to combat Manda. He and Manda exchanged death threats before finally coming face to face as foes, and when Katsuyu was ensnared in the serpent’s coils, he attacked the snake with his tantō. After Katsuyu escapes Manda’s coils, Gamabunta along with Jiraiya burns Manda using Fire Release: Toad Oil flame Bullet.

But before it could hit him, the serpent shed his skin during the attack and ambushed them from below ground. He held Manda’s tails as Tsunade impaled him through his mouth with the help of Gamabunta’s tantō, ultimately ending the conflict.

Kaima Capture Mission

Naruto summoned Gamabunta to fight Umibōzu in the Land of the Sea, but he was unaware that toads are freshwater creatures. Gamabunta, who disliked being in the sea since it gave him a rash, only agrees to help Naruto because his enemy misjudged him. However, he threw Naruto into the air as a punishment for summoning the water monster in seawater after he and Naruto defeated the otherwise invincible water creature by evaporating it. He added that despite this, he was still appreciative of Naruto’s attention to his kids.

Part 2

Pain’s Assault

Gamabunta and Gamakichi waited outside the Fifth Hokage’s office, which Naruto witnessed. It was then that Gamakichi began to tell him about Jiraiya’s passing after he asks why they are there, but Gamabunta interrupts him and says Fukasaku should be the one to inform Naruto.

Shima later summoned Gamabunta alongside Gamakichi, Gamaken, Gamahiro, Fukasaku, and Naruto to Konoha to help in the battle against Pain. Gamabunta silenced the enormous dog summon after he landed on it during their battle with the different animals that the Animal Path had summoned.

Naruto started to run low on Sage chakra, but he still intended to eliminate one more Pain before he ran out. Gamabunta swallowed Naruto and the Animal Path when it realized that the three toads were being pinned down by the numerous summons, which allowed Naruto to kill it without being distracted by the other Pains while Gamabunta kept the other Pains at bay.

The summons vanished once he spit out Naruto and the Animal Path, but Naruto had run out of Sage chakra. When the Deva Path noticed this, he decided to strike. He even used his tantō to deflect Gamabunta’s blow and land just in front of Naruto. He yelled for Naruto to move aside as he engaged the Deva Path, but Naruto told him to do the same because he was about to enter Sage Mode once again and did not want him to get caught by his Rasenshuriken. Gamabunta continued to strike, but the Deva Path again managed to dodge it.

Moments later, the Deva Path finally regained its gravity manipulation skills after Naruto killed the Naraka Path, and it pushed the charging Naruto away. Pain was easily able to escape the weapon attacks from Gamabunta and the other toads. The three toads then attempted to assault Pain once again, but he intervened and used his Shinra Tensei to launch them outside of Konoha’s boundaries.

He describes how he felt like all of his bones were fractured as he lay splayed on the ground in the forest. Later, Gamabunta was discovered by Neji with his Byakugan appearing to be unresponsive on the road leading back to Konoha. Neji referred to Gamabunta as one of Jiraiya’s toads. When Team Guy contacted him, he informed them that Pain had attacked Konoha.

Later, Gamabunta was spotted returning to Mount Myōboku where the Great Toad Sage used the Telescope Technique to watch the outcome of the battle with Pain and the conversation between Naruto and the real Pain, Nagato. The duo then watched as Nagato used the rest of his powers and sacrifices himself to revive the people he killed during the invasion.

The prophecy child had been both of Jiraiya’s students, but the Great Toad Sage told Gamabunta what had happened was foretold when he said it was over, adding that perhaps everything came together once Jiraiya decided not to give up and that the first book he wrote really was the key to changing the world.

Gamabunta’s Personality

Gamabunta is a pessimistic, unyielding, and remarkably apathetic toad. Unless the summoner is exceptionally skilled and commands his respect, he dislikes being told what to do. He has only permitted a select few people to ride on top of his head without asking: Jiraiya, Minato, and Naruto, although he is fairly certain of his fighting skills, he is also aware of his weaknesses and perceptive to the might of his enemies, as evidenced by his numerous when facing Shukaku directly.

He uses Japanese terms that only a yakuza criminal would use and speaks in the Hiroshima dialect, but he is nonetheless portrayed as a strong and effective character. He is passionately protective of his kids and only decided to battle Shukaku after he learned the opponent had harmed his young child, even though he had just moments earlier thought the opponent was suicidal.

His typical apathy is overshadowed by his dislike of being taken advantage of by anyone. He is frequently provoked to fight by one, both, or a combination of these two circumstances. Overall, despite his grumpy exterior, he cares for Naruto as though he were a son. In fact, he told Jiraiya that he knew about Naruto’s abilities and potential. Despite Jiraiya’s confessed lack of control over Gamabunta, the two of them appeared to be close friends and drinking companions. However, he occasionally reprimanded him.

Gamabunta’s Appearance

One of the biggest summons, Gamabunta, is about the size of a tailed beast. He has a rusty, dull red color, but there are brighter red marks on his chest, mouth, and around his eyes. He also has a scar above his left eye while both the upper and lower sides of his tongue are pierced with a number of stud-like holes.

He frequently carries a big dosu sword at his hip and frequently wears a blue happi vest with the kanji (ebi) on the back. He also carries a sizable kiseru pipe that he frequently uses to smoke.

The size of Gamabunta is inconsistent in the entire series. He is comparable in size to Shukaku and towering over woodlands in Part 1. However, in Part 2, he fluctuates between being the same size as in Part 1 and being no larger than a building.

Gamabunta’s Abilities

Gamabunta has consistently shown himself to be a formidable opponent, whether or not his summoner is by his side. He also demonstrates a scholarly and informed demeanor, as evidenced by his command to Naruto to forcibly awaken Gaara during the battle with Shukaku.

Ninjutsu

Gamabunta has the ability to sprew oil from his lips, which he has demonstrated by combining it with Jiraiya’s fire technique to create the Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame Bullet. He is skilled in nature transformation and can unleash tremendous water blasts with Water Release.

Kenjutsu & Physical Prowess

Gamabunta demonstrated his astonishing quickness despite his size when he leaped out of the fissure Naruto had first summoned him to and soared to a great height before tumbling down into the jungle. He has shown exceptional expertise when using several consecutive kicks to battle while in the air. He was able to momentarily bind the Nine-Tails with the help of his enormous mass. He could withstand a straight air shot from the Shukaku thanks to his extremely high durability.

The big tantō in Gamabunta’s armory is something he can use to deal enormous damage with because of his enormous size and power. He is an expert user of it, as evidenced by the way he used it to sever Shukaku’s arm.
