He worked for almost two years as an independent driver with the No. 96 number and changed it to No. 3 to pay tribute to Junior Johnson in 1971. Three years later, Childress became the winner of the unofficial invitational Metrolina 200.

He has competed in 285 races in the NASCAR Cup Series and 17 races in the NASCAR Grand National East Series.
