Jaime Gavilan: A Brief Biography

Jaime Gavilan Biography

Jaime Gavilán Martínez is a Spanish professional footballer who currently plays for ISL side Chennaiyin FC in the 2017-18 season.

Gavilan was born on 12 May 1985 in Valencia, Spain and plays primarily as a left midfielder, and also playing in the centre for some time.

He is seen as a strong midfielder who could make runs down the wing and cross the ball with both feet.

Having played most of his career in Spain, Gavilan has just the right amount of exposure to help impart his experience to Indian players and help the rise of football in the country.

Background

Gavilan started playing football in Valencia at Sporting Benimaclet and soon became a youth product of Valencia CF.

He made an entry into the senior team after playing for the reserve side for three seasons. He was one of the youngest players in the side and showed a lot of promise in the Spanish league.

At 17 years and 11 months, Gavilan made his senior debut which made him the youngest midfielder in the side. His talent was recognised and he was sent on loan to Tenerife.

Jaime Gavilan has represented the following teams - Valencia B, Valencia CF, Tenerife, Getafe, Levante, Platanias, ATK, Suwon, and Chennaiyin FC.

Debut

Gavilan made his club debut for Valencia CF on 19 April 2003, when he was not even 18 years of age. He came on as a substitute and played for 12 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Real Valladolid.

Gavilan made his U21 debut for Spain in 2004 and failed to get a full cap.

Rise to Glory

After tedious spells at his youth club Valencia CF where he was sent on loan thrice, Gavilan decided to join Getafe, one of the clubs he was loaned to.

During his contract at Valencia, Gavilan was loaned to Tenerife in the 2004-05 season. He made 30 appearances for the second division side and scored 3 goals.

Gavilan was sent on loan again the next season to Getafe, where he made 32 appearances and scored 4 goals.

He was vital in midfield and made his presence known to defenders. He made only 17 appearances for Valencia, which was mostly as a substitute.

In 2008, Gavilan made his loan to Getafe permanent and became a crucial part of the side’s midfield machine.

He started almost every match in his debut season, and was a known entity in every match. He also helped his side to a win against Sevilla FC by scoring the only goal of the match. He would then spend most of his career there making 204 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 27 assists in a span of 6 years.

In 2014, Gavilan was left without a contract and was signed by another Spanish club Levante UD, where he was injured most of the season and managed to play only 2 games. He made a switch to Greek side Platanias FC in 2015, and then immediately made another switch to the newly inducted Indian Super League, signing for Atletico de Kolkata.

Gavilan made another switch to South Korean club Suwon FC, where he played 23 matches and scored 3 goals. He was snapped up by Chennaiyin FC after he ran out of the contract at Suwon.
