Kieran Trippier: A Brief Biography

Kieran Trippier is an English professional footballer who plays as a right-back for the England national team and Premier League side Newcastle United. He is known for his versatility and has been deployed as a left-back during his career as well.



Early Life

Kieran Trippier was born on September 19, 1990, in Bury, Greater Manchester, England. He attended Woodhey High School in Bury, where he played for the school's football team. He was later scouted by Manchester City's youth academy and joined the club at the age of nine.


Trippier spent several years in Manchester City's youth system, where he developed his skills as a right-back. He also spent time on loan at various clubs, including Barnsley, where he made his professional debut in 2010.



Club Career

Trippier began his professional club career at Manchester City, where he was part of their youth system. He made his senior debut in 2010, while on loan at Barnsley, and went on to have loan spells at several other clubs, including Burnley.


In 2011, Trippier signed for Burnley on a permanent deal, and he quickly established himself as a key player for the club. He made over 180 appearances for Burnley in all competitions, helping them win promotion to the Premier League in the 2013-14 season.


In 2015, Tottenham Hotspur signed Trippier for a reported fee of £3.5 million. He initially served as a backup to Kyle Walker but eventually became a regular in the starting lineup. Trippier's standout season for Tottenham came in the 2018-19 campaign, where he helped the team reach the final of the UEFA Champions League. He also earned a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances that season. In total, he made 114 appearances for Spurs over four seasons.


Trippier moved to Spanish club Atletico Madrid for a fee of £20 million. He had an impressive debut season in Spain, helping Atletico Madrid finish third in La Liga and reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. In his second season at the club, he helped Atletico Madrid win La Liga, his performances earned him a place in the 2020-21 La Liga Team of the Season.


He signed for Premier League side Newcastle United midway the 2021-22 season on January 7, 2022, on a two-and-a-half contract for a fee of £12 million plus add-ons. On January 27, 2023, he signed a contract extension until the summer of 2025.



International Career

Trippier has represented the England national team at various levels, starting with the under-18s in 2008. He later played for the under-19s and under-20s before making his debut for the senior team in June 2017.


He was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played a key role in the team's success, scoring England's opening goal in the semi-final against Croatia in an eventual 2-1 loss.


Trippier has since been a regular in the England squad, and he was named in the team's 23-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. He started all of England's group-stage matches and played in the knockout rounds, including the final against Italy. Although England lost the final, Trippier's performances throughout the tournament were praised, and he was named in the UEFA Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament.


As of March 2023, Trippier has earned over 40 caps for England, scoring one goal.

  • Trippier holds the record for the most crosses delivered by a player in a single World Cup game. He delivered 24 crosses in England's semi-final against Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
