ABOUT

Ryan James Shawcross is an English footballer who plays as a defender for Stoke City and the England national team. Shawcross began his football career with Manchester United, making his debut for the club against Crewe Alexandra in the Football League Cup. While with United, he spent time on loan at Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp. He also played for Stoke City on loan in August 2007, making a huge impact by scoring on his debut against Cardiff City. He scored his first two goals for Stoke during his first two games, one on his debut during a 1–0 win on the opening day of the season. Following this, he was bought by the club from Manchester United for £1 million in January 2008. He scored from a header in Stoke's first match of the 2009–10 season, helping them to a 2–0 win over Burnley. On 12 December 2009, he scored his second goal in the 2009–10 season for Stoke against Wigan Athletic in a 2–2 draw. During the 2010-2011 season, Shawcross was been given the Stoke City captaincy. In January 2008, Shawcross won his first call up to the England under-21 squad for a 2009 UEFA under-21 Championship Qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland. Shawcross was called up to the England team by Roy Hodgson on 4 October 2012 for the 2014 world cup qualifiers against Poland and San Marino. He made his England debut against Sweden on 14 November 2012 at the Friends Arena.
