Citadel season 1 episode 5 recap: Why did Dahlia kidnap Nadia's daughter?

The latest episode of Citadel began right where episode four left off. It showed Nadia and Mason inside the Manticore supercell rescuing Carter Spence. Just like in episode 4, fans are taken to a flashback showcasing incidents that happened almost 10 years ago. The episode also gave viewers a look into Mason and Nadia's yesteryears, their memory loss, and the downfall of the Citadel.

They saw that Mason has proposed to Nadia in the past but when she learned that he had used the memory-wiping technology on her friend, she quickly broke things off with him. As a matter of fact, the same technology was used on the duo to wipe off their memories.

Meanwhile, one of the Silje brothers received a bullet in his head from Dahlia Archer. Archer had held Orlick hostage in order to retrieve the codes to the nuclear weapons.

Dahlia had located the families of Mason and Bernard and thus, Bernard had to give the nuclear codes to the Manticore. However, Dahlia still ordered the killing of Bernard's family. She soon realized that the nuclear codes were not going to cut it since Mason was the only one who could give her what she wanted.

Viewers then saw another flashback of Nadia's investigation into the disappearance of her friend Abby. Nadia has gradually started losing trust in every Citadel member, especially Mason.

She was frustrated and decided to leave her life as a spy behind her but it was soon revealed that she has gotten pregnant with Mason's baby. She fled to Spain and hid her pregnancy and baby, and even left her daughter in Spain to keep her safe.

Back in the present, Nadia revealed everything to Mason and Carter. Mason and Carter thought that she was the mole and caused the downfall of Citadel but they were completely wrong. Nadia said that she did what she did to have a daughter in Spain and protect her.

Suddenly, Manticore located them and forced Mason to help Dahlia retrieve the nuclear weapons. When Mason refused to help her, it is shockingly revealed that Nadia and Mason's daughter had been kidnapped by Manticore.

A brief synopsis of Citadel

A Prime Video press release describes Citadel as:

"Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives."

It further states that they have remained hidden since then and are building lives under new identities and are unaware of their pasts. The synopsis continues that it was all okay until Mason was tracked down by his former colleague Bernard Orlick, who needs his help to stop Manticore from establishing a "new world order."

It goes on to say:

"Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love."

Citadel has released five episodes so far. The sixth episode/season finale will be released on May 26, 2023, on Prime Video.
