The main lead of the show up until the 19th season was Meredith Grey (portrayed by Ellen Pompeo). Grey's Anatomy former executive producer Shonda Rhimes had once claimed that the show would come to an end when the lead Ellen Pompeo would decide to step back. However, Rhimes had to retract her statement back, as the show continues to work wonders after Dr. Meredith Grey aka Ellen Pompeo had minimal presence during the latest season.

Despite fans being heartbroken about Pompeo's exit from the show, they have continued to shower love and support Grey's Anatomy. This resulted in Shonda Rhimes changing her statement and claiming that Grey's Anatomy would continue as long as the fans want it to continue.

During her interview with E! News, Rhimes said, “[The show] belongs to the fans and the fans have been really clear about what they want. I might be a very old lady by the time we reach its last season because it doesn’t seem to be stopping.”

Is Grey's Anatomy season 20 going to be its last season?

There is no confirmation available on that. On March 24, 2023, Grey's Anatomy was renewed for its 20th season. In terms of speculation, it does not look like the makers of Grey's Anatomy are going to bring the series to an end anytime soon.

It is also noted that ABC has not billed the upcoming season as the final season of the medical drama, which usually makers do when wanting to prepare their fans for a goodbye. Hence, there is a huge possibility that Grey's Anatomy may continue for another few seasons before coming to a halt.

Will Ellen Pompeo appear in Grey's Anatomy season 20?

Grey's Anatomy fans were left shattered after it was confirmed that Ellen Pompeo was ready to step back from starring in the successful medical drama after all these years. The American actress bid the show adieu in season 19. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Ellen Pompeo has kept the door open for future cameos on the show as Dr. Meredith Grey.

During Ellen Pompeo's conversation with Variety, the actress revealed how excited she was about her storyline on the show and what the fans should expect about her future appearance on Grey's Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo said, "Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s pretty controversial. So Meredith’s character left to go to Boston because her daughter needed to go to a special school. I will be making some appearances hopefully next year, if I can find some time."

When will Grey's Anatomy season 20 be released?

There hasn't been any official announcement made regarding the Grey's Anatomy season 20 release. However, the show's writers have time and again made sure that they have not made the show's fans wait long for the new season.

The announcement of Grey's Anatomy being renewed for season 20 was made in March 2023. Hence it is safe to assume that the next season would premiere likely in fall 2023.
