5 interesting facts about Marvel's Secret Invasion that you should know before its release

1) The enemy could be anywhere and anyone

One thing that has always been consistent in Marvel films is that the opposing factions are always clearly defined. However, with Secret Invasion, things take a much more interesting turn as the audience is forced to question everybody's true identities and motives.

The series revolves around a covert infiltration of the shape-shifting Skrulls into the Earth's society at multiple levels. Be it superheroes, government officials, or even friends, the Skrulls have invaded every role. This makes a huge impact on the superhero community and other influential figures as they completely lose faith in even their most trusted allies.

Secret Invasion puts an interesting spin on the antagonist to make for a more enthralling series overall. A fight is the hardest when you don't even know who you are fighting and the series will portray one of Nick Fury's hardest battles ever.

2) Maria Hill finally gets more screentime

Cobie Smulders plays the character of Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maria Hill has been Fury's right-hand lady since he was Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, considering how pivotal her character is, she has not received enough screen time, with even Coulson playing a huge role in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With Secret Invasion, things are about to change for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. In the comic book arc, Hill played a major role in the battle against the rogue Skrulls and portrayed herself as a force to be reckoned with, outside Nick Fury's shadow. During an interview with Vanity Fair, Cobie Smulders talked about how we would be seeing a different side of Maria Hill - a disillusioned agent who has run out of patience for her boss's absence.

3) Will the series follow the source material?

While the upcoming Disney+ series is based on the comic book storyline of the same name, fans can expect to see a variation from the source material in the MCU adaptation. The trailer release has already confused Marvel fans about the basic plotline for the title.

It is well known that Marvel Studios change up the stories for their cinematic adaptations to suit their vision of the MCU. While they do adhere to overarching plotlines, certain characters and story elements get modified. Secret Invasion might as well see a similar case, with certain major characters missing and changes to the story.

The comic book cross-over miniseries played a pivotal role in 2008 in setting the future of the Marvel Comics Universe. It introduced major characters and also paved the way for the Dark Reign era in the comics. However, that does not seem to be the case for the Disney+ limited series, which apparently focuses more on a spy thriller-style arc focusing on Fury.

4) The battle Fury fights alone

With the primary focus falling on Nick Fury as he tries to defend Earth from one of its most dangerous predicaments, Secret Invasion will interestingly keep appearances from superheroes to a minimum. One of the highlights of the upcoming series is that Nick Fury fighting this invasion in his personal capacity.

In the trailer, when the character played by Olivia Colman asks Fury why he doesn't ask for help from his superpowered friends, he reiterates that it is something he has to do on his own. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Samuel L. Jackson talked about how the viewers would get to see a more vulnerable side of Nick Fury, along with a deeper backstory for the character.

He said:

"We're also filling in blanks about Fury's life that we don't know. We're meeting people he knew when he was out there on his own, before there were Avengers or anyone else. I had to figure out some stuff and work out some new things, which I've been trying to do for a while. It's great to have an opportunity to find out who he was and delve into how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life."

5) A political undertone

The MCU used to have an underlying political commentary in their films before Avengers: Endgame, after which the films just became a way of expanding the universe and introducing new characters. Even the conflicts were much more simple, without a lot of political or extensive rationale.

However, Secret Invasion seems to be ready to change that. While the series does revolve around an alien invasion on Earth, the storyline is much more than what meets the eye. The plot touches upon socially relatable problems, with a more-than-subtle political undercurrent to the whole storyline.
