A University of Tennessee professor recently went viral on social media after he seemingly cancelled a college class due to news of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement. For the uninitiated, the Style singer announced her engagement to the Kansas City Chiefs star on August 26, 2025, weeks after announcing her upcoming album on Kelce's podcast. That same day, Matthew Pittman, an associate professor in the university's College of Communication and Information, went viral due to a clip of him apparently cancelling a scheduled "biochem midterm" to process the news.“Due to this information, I can’t focus. You all can’t focus. Class is canceled. Get out of here. Please [try] to process this information,” he says in the clip.In the clip, the students are heard shouting enthusiastically on hearing about the canceled class, with one student spotted running straight for the door. While many believed the clip to be true, Pullman later revealed via his Instagram account that the clip was part of a skit to draw attention to Swift and Kelce's engagement from an advertising and PR perspective. The professor uploaded the full sketch to his Instagram, breaking down the timing of the engagement's announcement and noting how it followed Taylor Swift's appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast, which aired on August 13."I don't know how anybody can be expected to focus on schoolwork or anything work or career-related right now. It's pretty big news. It's going to take a few days to process this," he added. He also noted that the engagement happened months after people were over their Taylor Swift fatigue, following multiple sports fans complaining about seeing the singer on screen during the Chiefs' games. The professor also pointed out how several brands jumped on the orange and mint green trend on social media after Taylor Swift announced her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, alluding to another viral trend following the engagement.Furthermore, Pullman called the engagement post "perfect," adding that it had the potential to become "the number one shared post in the history of social media." Taylor Swift's engagement post currently has 33 million likes. Pullman's Instagram post was captioned:"Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married… just kidding But Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are, and we’ve got the ADPR take! Associate Professor Matthew Pittman, who studies social influence, cognition, and all things social media, breaks down the engagement from an advertising and PR perspective. Watch how he connects this pop culture moment to the classroom (yes, including a skit at the end)."
