Who is Chloe Malle's father? Anna Wintour taps Candice Bergen's daughter to be Vogue's new editor-in-chief

Former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has tipped Chloe Malle to be the next editor of the iconic fashion and lifestyle magazine. Malle has been working in Vogue since 2011.

On Tuesday, September 2, Vogue US announced on its website that Chloe Malle will take over as the head of editorial content of the magazine, succeeding Anna Wintour. The role was originally called the editor-in-chief, which Wintour held for almost the last 40 years.

Wintour said in a statement on the website:

"At a moment of change both within fashion and outside it, Vogue must continue to be both the standard-bearer and the boundary-pushing leader. Chloe has proven often that she can find the balance between American Vogue’s long, singular history and its future on the front lines of the new.

Continuing her statement, Wintour further noted:

I am so excited to continue working with her, as her mentor but also as her student, while she leads us and our audiences where we’ve never been before."

The decision comes after Wintour stepped down from her role as Vogue's editor-in-chief in June of last year. However, she will continue to serve as the global editorial director of the magazine and the chief content officer of Condé Nast. She continues to oversee other titles under her helm, including Architectural Digest, GQ, Teen Vogue, and GQ.

Born and raised in New York, Chloe Malle is the daughter of Candice Bergen and the late Louis Malle. Malle's father, Louis Malle, was a French film director, while her mother, Candice Bergen, is an actress.

Louis Malle was known for his work across various genres, including documentaries, romances, period dramas, and thrillers. Some of his most notable films include Elevator to the Gallows, Lacombe, Lucien, and Atlantic City, among others. Candice Bergen notably portrayed a Vogue editor in several episodes of the popular drama series Sex and the City.

Malle began her career at Condé Nast as Vogue's social editor in 2011. She later became a contributing editor in 2016 and, in 2023, was appointed editor of Vogue.com, the magazine’s digital platform.

After officially taking over as the head of editorial content of Vogue US, Chloe Malle shared her thoughts in her statement on the magazine's website.

"Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled — and awed — to be part of that. I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor," she said.

Chloe Malle graduated with a degree in comparative literature and writing from Brown University, an Ivy League institution. Her first career role in journalism came as a real estate writer for the New York Observer.

In addition to her duties overseeing Vogue.com, Malle also launched Dogue, a digital-only edition of the magazine focusing on celebrity dogs. Moreover, she is also the co-host of The Run-Through with Vogue podcast.

Malle has interviewed multiple major celebrities for Condé Nast, including Lauren Sanchez for Vogue's June cover story, before her wedding to Jeff Bezos. Other notable personalities include film director Greta Gerwig and supermodel Gigi Hadid.

After Anna Wintour stepped down as editor-in-chief of Vogue, Chloe Malle's name was not among the top choices among the leading candidates speculated online as her successor. The job posting was shared on LinkedIn in June, with frontrunners to take over the role coming from within the industry.

As noted by CNN, contenders included W’s first female editor-in-chief, Sara Moonves, and Nicole Phelps, global director of Vogue Runway and Vogue Business.

However, renowned fashion journalist Lauren Sherman first broke the news of Chloe Malle taking over Anna Wintour’s position on September 1 via Puck News. It was officially confirmed the next day on Vogue’s website.

It remains to be seen how Malle will continue the work of the fashion and lifestyle magazine, which has long been influential in popular culture.
