The German’s arrived on the pitch on a March night for the second leg of a “round of 16” tie against Barcelona, not knowing that they were about to become part of footballing history. Ninety minutes later, it was done. Messi put five past the Germans, helping Barcelona to a comprehensive 7-1 victory, becoming the first person to score five in a game in the Champions League.
