Top 5 Premier League manager of the season contenders

The Premier League has now reached its most crucial phase and there have been some managers who have done an amazing job for their teams this season. Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson won the award a record 11 times including in his last season. Now that he is out of the picture a new breed on managers have emerged who are curretly vying for the title. Here is a list of top 5 managers who could win the Manager of the Season award at the end of this campaign.

#1 Brendan Rodgers

The Liverpool manager inherited a team who finished 8th before he took the reigns but has now successfully made them into the force they once were. The Irishman has done a brilliant job with Liverpool who are currently 2nd in the League this term. The 41-year-old has made some shrewd signings in the form of Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Simon Mignolet who are important players for the Merseyside club this season. Rodgers's faith in young players has also drawn praise from critics.

Liverpool look like genuine title contenders with Rodgers at the helm. The Reds have won all but one game at Anfield this season which is an amazing record. Champions League football is almost guaranteed next season and Brendan will hopefully do well against some of the biggest managers in Europe. The Manager of the Season award would be a fitting tribute to this genius.

#2 Manuel Pellegrini

The Chilean wasn't bluffing when he stated that Manchester City would play a different style of football under him. The Manchester club have been on a free scoring run this season and are currently the only English club to score 100 goals before January.

Pellegrini got off to a shaky start but made up for it with huge wins against Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. City scored 115 goals by the end of January which is more than any other club in Europe. The 60-year-old is sure to win at least one trophy with City this season. If all goes well then the Manager of the Season award could land in the former Real Madrid managers hands.

#3 Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese tactician won the prestigious award twice in a row during his first stint with Chelsea and could take home the prize again this year. The 51-year-old's team are now at the top of the League in spite of having less than prolific strikers. Mourinho's famous mind games have been the key to Chelsea's success this season.

The manager has not lost a single game at Stamford Bridge this season and may hold that record throughout the campaign. Mourinho is certain to lift the Premier League trophy for the third time with Chelsea if he manages to keep his troops together. If he pulls that off then there is a strong chance of him winning the Manager of the Season award once again.

#4 Roberto Martinez

The Everton manager is having a dream debut season so far with his team standing fifth in the Premier League. The Spaniard has David Moyes to thank for leaving him with such a good squad but Martinez has made a few shrewd loan signings of his own including Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and Gerard Deulofeu. The 40-year-old famously won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic last season and could win it again with Everton this season.

Martinez has lost just 9 games as Everton manager which is really good. The manager has brought a new style of attacking football to Everton which is one of the main reasons why they have had such a good run of form. It won't be a shock if Roberto is crowned as the Manager of the Season.

#5 Gus Poyet

The Uruguayan did an incredible job on the pitch and now seems to be doing an equally good job on the sidelines. The 46-year-old is doing an incredible job with Sunderland and could even drag them out of relegation successfully. The manager got off to a shaky start with Sunderland but found his feet later with wins against local rivals Newcastle United and a Capital One Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United.

Poyet could win his first trophy as Sunderland manager if he manages to over come Pellegrini's Manchester City in the Capital One Cup finals today. Poyet's hard work could see him being named as the Manager of the Season.
