The Jaffna Stallions will be taking part in the first-ever Lankan Premier League (LPL) 2020 in Sri Lanka. The Jaffna-based franchise will compete with four other teams to have a go at the inaugural title win over the space of 18 days. The Stallions are a bowling-heavy side and will look forward to having green or dusty pitches to capitalize on, throughout the tournament.
The Stallions have their national all-rounder Thisara Perera as the marquee player for the 2020 edition of the LPL. The 31-year-old has been announced as the captain for the inaugural edition. Perera will bring in tons of experience into the side and prove to be an inspiring leader for his compatriots. With 3,435 runs and 238 wickets in T20 cricket, he is a pillar for the side.
They have Avishka Fernando and Dhananjaya de Silva to help with the scoring as well. The other senior Sri Lankan cricketer in their side is Suranga Lakmal. He is the undesignated leader of the bowling attack for the Stallions with the other bowlers lacking international experience.
The Stallions have roped in all-rounders Ravi Bopara and Shoaib Malik who will be crucial in the middle order for the side. These two cricketers have played over a total of 750 T20s and are easily two of the most experienced cricketers in the world in the shortest format of the game.
They have a strong foreign pace battery in Kyle Abbott, Duane Olivier and Usman Shinwari. While the Pakistan left-arm-pacer relies more on the swing, the South Africans let their pace do the talking along with the occasional movement on the ball.
The Jaffna Stallions have made an interesting choice of the 24-year-old southpaw from England, Tom Moores. The batsman has played just 123 matches in professional cricket and averages under 36 in each format of the game. It will be even more interesting to see how Perera utilizes him in the competition.
A UK-based British-Sri Lankan businessman Brindon Bagirathan is the owner of the Stallions. The side has managed to get Thilina Kandambi as the Head coach, Hemang Badani as the Consultant, Mairo Villavarayen as the fast bowling coach, Sachith Pathirana as the spin bowling coach and Vimukthi Deshapriya as their fielding coach and throwdowns specialist.
