World no.1 Novak Djokovic is back in action this week at the Swiss Indoors to be held in Basel. This is Novak’s first tournament since his US Open triumph over Rafael Nadal. As everybody knows, this season has been a total joyride for Nole as he has compiled a 64-3 record inclusive of 10 titles (3 Slams as well). Djokovic is returning to action this week in Basel following a six-week back injury lay off
Giving him company at Basel will be home boy Roger Federer and current hotshot Andy Murray. Federer has won Basel 4 times before while Murray is coming here on the back of a hat-trick of titles in the Asian leg of the ATP Tour.
Basel will start Novak’s bid to finish off the season in the same style as he began it. After this, Novak will play the Paris Masters and the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at London.
During this 6 week injury layoff Djokovic has been busy undergoing therapies and getting back to match fitness. He doesn’t expect to be operating at 100 percent in his very first tournament after the injury. He will also be returning to indoor action after quite a long time.
The 24-year-old Djokovic is making his third successive appearance at the ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court event in Basel. He played Federer in the final on both his previous appearances, triumphing in 2009 before Federer took revenge for that defeat in last year’s title match.
Sparks have already flown this year in their meetings. Federer inflicted the first loss in Novak’s 2011 season in Paris after Novak compiled a 41-0 season record going into that semifinal against Federer in Paris. And in the US Open semifinal at New York, Djokovic produced an exact repeat of their US Open semifinal in 2010 by saving a match point in another 5 set thriller, to deny Federer for the 2nd successive year.
These 2 could very well meet in the finals, the coming weekend as well. Murray might prove to be one potential stumbling block. The home fans would be firmly between their legendary son as Federer is also back in ATP level action after quite a break.
This week’s Basel Indoors is gonna be one helluva ride for sure.
