Latest ATP/WTA Rankings: Somdev placed 136th, Ankita occupies 364th spot

Somdev Devvarman

India’s highest ranked men’s singles player Somdev Devvarman dropped a place recently to be placed at 136th in the latest ATP rankings.

It may be worth recalling that Somdev had lost in the first round of the Wimbledon qualifiers to Australia’s 215th ranked Matt Reid 6-7 (4), 6-4, 16-18.

The Indian had earlier reached the semifinals of the ATP Nottingham challenger tournament, where he lost to American Steve Johnson 3-6, 4-6.

He had surged forty-eight places following a semifinal finish at the ATP Caltanissetta Challenger in Italy as well as a second round appearance at the French Open after going through the qualifying route.

Somdev also had lost to world number three Roger Federer in the second round of the French Open. He made the main draw after getting the better of 113th ranked American Wayne Odesnik in the final qualifying tie.

He is on a comeback trail after a lingering shoulder injury consigned him to the sidelines for more than nine months in 2012.

Somdev has been regularly taking part in ATP events only since late last year. He had reached a career-high ATP ranking of 62 in July 2011.

Earlier this year, he took on world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round of the Miami Masters and lost in straight sets to the Serb.

Saketh Myneni, who recently became the country’s second highest ranked singles player, fell two spots to be placed 281th.

The 25-year-old had annexed both the Chandigarh and Rohtak Futures recently.

Among the other Indian men’s singles players, Prakash Amritraj, son of legendary Vijay Amritraj, advanced two spots to be placed 310th.

N Sriram Balaj, who won the Chennai ITF Futures recently, moved up two places to be ranked 335th while Sanam Singh dropped three places to be placed 342nd.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who recently won the Coimbatore ITF Futures, jumped twenty four places to occupy the 354th position.

Yuki Bhambri fell two places to be 417th.

Vijayant Malik surged 29 places to occupy the 470th spot.

Among the Indian women, Ankita Raina fell two spots to be placed 364nd.
