Muller is eyeing his first singles title

Alexandre Muller takes on Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in an all-unseeded Grand Prix Hassan II final in Marrakech on Sunday. Both men are assured of career-best rankings on Monday following their inspired runs this week.

The 126th-ranked Muller continued his fine exploits this week by beating Pavel Kotov in straight sets in an all-first-time ATP semifinal. In the process, he racked up his fourth win of the week to add to the three he had before arriving in Marrakech.

Building on his upset of top seed Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals, Muller was clutch on serve (five of eight break points saved) and return (saved four of five break points). He improved to an impressive 6-1 in 2023. He's assured of breaking into the top 100 (No. 96), while a win will take him up to No. 78.

Meanwhile, World No. 82 Carballes Baena improved to 10-3 in Marrakech and 8-8 on the season by taking out second-seed Daniel Evans in three sets. It was the Spaniard's third-seeded scalp in four matches this week, having taken out sixth-seed Maxime Cressy in the first round and fourth-seed Tallon Griekspoor in the quarterfinals.

The Spaniard will now better his previous highest ranking of 71 by 10, while a win will take him into the top 50 (No. 49).

Both Muller and Carballes Baena are quintessential baseliners and tend to play their best tennis on claycourt.

The two players have improved by leaps and bounds since their only meeting four years ago, making this a tough matchup to call. Carballes Baena is obviously the more experienced of the two and will start as the marginal favourite.

However, Muller will fancy his chances after producing one of the best performances of his career in the semifinal win over Kotov. Meanwhile, Carballes Baena is eyeing a return to the winner's podium since winning his only singles title in Quito (Ecuador) in 2018.
